Mamiya 45mm f/2.8 m645 ?

I just received a Mamiya 45mm f/2.8 for the M645. I'm not sure which model it is. It has the 67mm filter but is not a "N" model. What interesting is that there is a little "S" sticker on the front of the lens after "45mm" & before the serial number. Anyone now what this lens is?

Yes it has mamiya-sekor c.

My 45mm f2.8 is in the UK so I can't check exactly which it is but the N lens looks more like the 80mm, the barrel is the same width (roughly) at both ends, whereas my lens widens significantly towards the front element. I think it's the S, it's a superb lens very sharp, flare free and it's my favourite 645 lens, I've had mine 25+ years.

However I think the filter ring is more than 67mm, there was a newer smaller version more like the N series, surprisingly there's not a good website for Mamiya equipment/lenses.

I sold my 645 stuff about last year, but if my memory doesn't let me down, the older version
(with the square rubber on the focussing ring) and the N Version (with the tank caterpillar rubber)
are optically the same and have the same filter size (67). The color of the distance (and f-stop ?)
scale is different and the depht of field scale on th older version is overly optimistic, on
the N-Version it's much more conservative. I had the older version and lost a couple of images
because I trusted the depht of field scale and, as a result, had the foreground blurred.

It is, then, a Mamiya Sekor C lens.

There was a version of the 45mm between the original C with the 77mm filter ring and the N. It has a 67mm filter ring like the N version. I had one when I had my 645 equipment. Great lens, by the way. KEH calls it an S version lens. It is newer and has basically the same optics as the C version from what I understand. IIRC All Mamiya M645 lenses have "Mamiya Sekor C" on them, but:

1. C versions (no other letters) - oldest M645, smooth, all-metal construction, lower contrast (single coating?) bit very nice tonality, can be more prone to flare. My pref.

2. S versions - Have same lettering as #1 but also an "S". Transitional model. C construction, but N-style multi-coatings. More contrast, somewhat less prone to flare.

3.N Version. "N" lettering as well as #1. Most modern M6456 prior to AF. Plastic/metal construction. Lighter. S-style coatings (or vice-versa). MAY be less smooth in operation if older.

Resolution between versions the same, just matter of global contrast, flare, weight and construction.

Actually, I should correct my above comments, later model lenses did drop the "Mamiya Sekor C" in favor of just "Mamiya'
