I was wondering if the focusing rangefinder works with the 50mm lens? or do you have to estimate distance for focusing?

Yes it does, because you focus in the camera, the camera has a rangefinder, when you use the 50mm, you use the external finder just for framing, and the rangefinder built in the camera to focus, like for example a screw leica with a external viewfinder.
