mamiya 1000s shutter and light meter attachment

I have a 1000S that works. It has the light metering prism that uses the shutter battery.

To use the meter, you set the MASTER shutter speed selector on the side of the camera body to the dot in circle to activate the light meter having control of the shutter.

Issue is, in the manual, and in real life, WHEN you shoot the camera with the MASTER shutter speed in the circle dot position, the mirror sticks in the up position and requires a manual reset to unstick it.

Am i SUPPOSED to leave the MASTER speed selector in the circle dot setting, or am i supposed to calculate the camera indicated shutter speed, and RESET the MASTER shutter speed selector dial to that setting..

the manual doesnt say ANYTHING about that.

On my 1000s with the pd metering prism the main shutter speed dial should be set to the red position, where it is locked in place and use the shutter speed dial on the prism, I leave mine in that setting all the time and just use the prisim meter and shutter speed dial, My mirror always returns to rest after firing the shutter, never sticks up, I have just had a very quick look in the manual and the only thing I can find is mirror lock up, check that the mirror lock is set to normal, so in short when using the metering prism leave the main shutter dial in the red dot, use the meter dial in the prism, and make sure the mirror is not locked up, can't think of anything else

I have had a good look at my manual, and it states that if the shutter speed dial is set to the red dot, and the PD prisim finder is not mounted then the mirror will stick in the up position, so it appears there could be a problem with the mounting, check the prism is properly attached and try cleaning the contacts, The mirror should not stick up

my manual tells me to use my viewfinder and prism, with 6 LED EV meter, I HAVE to have the master shutter speed dial on the side set to the dot inside a circle setting. then use the prism meter and its built in shutter speed dial to adjust to calculate exposre and take a photo.

but the manual says NOT to take photos when the master dial is in the CIRCLE DOT setting because that will make the shutter stick, and it DOES make it stick in real life.

If everything is working correctly, when you have the meter prism installed, you set the body's shutter dial to the red dot and the meter prism takes over controlling the shutter speed.

When the meter prism is not installed, setting the shutter speed to the red dot will cause problems, because the body is not getting a shutter control signal. That's what the manual is trying to tell you.

Your setup isn't working properly. This could be a weak battery, or dirty contacts between the meter and the prism as R Gould suggested, or you don't have the prism firmly seated to make contact, or the prism doesn't work, although if you are getting a meter reading then the prism probably works fine.

Ah, not to be confused with a Mamiya 1000 - I'm reading this and scratching my head "Wha...??"

You are miss reading your manual, I have the same camera and manual. what your manual is saying is WITHOUT the PD metering prism attached DO NOT fire the shutter with the Body mounted dial in the red spot setting as that will cause the mirror to stick up and you will need to use the mirror up switch to re set the meter. with the PD meter prism attached then DO NOT use the body mounted shutter speed dial other than in the RED DOT setting or else the meter will be switched of, meter as normal settint the green led to the center position either by adjusting the shutter speed or the aperture, compose and take the photo. mirror will return, ready for the next photo. your problem must be 1 the prisim is not attached to the camera correctly or 2 you have dirty contacts which means you have no or poor contact between the camera body and the prisim meaning that the camera doesn't know your are using the prism meter, and so decides that your are shooting with the main body dial incorrectly set, or 3 you have a weak or bad battery. check the condition of the battery by pushing the battery check red button which is on the top left just below the shutter dial. If the green LED on the other side of the top does not glow brightly then the battery is on the way out, replace battery and clean the contacts and if that does not cure the problem then you may have an electrical either in the camera or prism finder. but most certainly with the prism finder , with the body dial on the red . setting the mirror ius instant return with the 1000s
