I had a shock yesterday when I learned my local HP Indigo Printer closed two weeks ago without warning or explanation. No services are available. They will auction-off their equipment.

I have the ability to print more of the first edition by the printer I have used for over a decade for 23 printings. I have a few more of the 2nd edition that I'll sell or give to institutions who will make the books available to a broad audience. I am giving my research, the printing files and copyrights to a university rare books and collections library so researchers will have access to the information. Printing more of the 2nd edition is very unlikely. The library will protect the copyright.

Very sorry to hear that Bob. It's a great anthology and piece of photographic history.

On the positive side, I guess my copy of the 2nd Edition is now collectible and should fetch millions

I'm sad to have missed the opportunity to purchase the 2nd edition. That's what I get for waiting.

Anyway, I'm curious about which university this is going to. I'm extremely biased, but if you haven't decided yet, it would make a great addition to the Yale Beinecke rare books library or the special collections of the Yale Haas Arts Library.

You're right! Somehow I only saw the "give to institutions" part.

@laser - Let me know if you have a 2nd edition you're willing to sell!

Edit: Or wait..."sell or give to institutions" may still mean not me hah.

This is an amazing book and was well worth the price. It had a wealth of information on anything and everything film! Sad to hear the 2nd edition is out of print, hopefully a few more folks here have a chance to get it. If you are considering getting it, definitely ask if you can purchase one of these last few copies!

Agreed! I was fortunate enough to be able purchase a copy of the second edition; it's an amazing book.

Thanks for all the kind words. I have given the information to the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY. They have a professionally managed Rare Books and Collections Library and have a significant Eastman Kodak Company Collection.

I am going to "let the dust settle". I have a few copies I may sell next year or give to my grandchildren.

A properly formatted pdf could be uploaded to a print-on-demand service like Blurb or Lulu. An isbn would make that purchasable through Amazon for the foreseeable future.

Alternatively, if you wanted wider open access, you could upload a pdf of the book to archive.org and grant them appropriate permissions. That site currently hosts many many books that would otherwise be inaccessible.

That is, if you wanted more people to have access to your work now and in the future.

At the risk of being somewhat morbid, it would be a really good idea for authors to consider leaving instructions in their testamentary documents respecting doing something like what Don_ih describes.

I took the advice to contact LuLu.

I was very surprised and disappointed in their replies. They refused to tell me what digital press they use. I asked for a sample of their two color quality levels but was told they don't give samples. I could purchase proofs. I asked for a plot or specification of their color space. Their answer was they don't provide any specifications on their products. Their description of premium color was "heavy ink coverage". No statement on color gamut or accuracy just a lot of ink.

Their customers are buying "a pig in a poke".

LuLu sounds like a very bad choice. They depend on naive customers.

All of these places use the same kind of printers, basically.

Last I checked, the price of their proofs is very low. Assuming you format the document correctly and specify the print material properly, it'll print in good quality. I had a small book printed by them where each page had full-colour paintings my wife did along with text. The printed copy looked exactly as it should. But she's a graphic designer and could easily set up the document to print properly.

Perhaps Blurb would be worth a try. Or Ask Eric Kunsman at BookSmart Studios- he teaches at RIT as well (I think, my info is old).
There needs to be a way to keep this invaluable book in print.

The Second Edition is such a great book, so comprehensive and a labour of love, I treasure my copy. It would be a great pity if a print version were not available in future. I suspect several print shops could do as good a job as your local (Rochester NY?) one and would encourage you to find one.

In my opinion, whilst the colour reproduction of the existing edition is excellent, it is NOT the defining feature of the book, which is rather the details of all the behind the scenes work that went into making and selling film (i.e. the text, not the photos!). But I realise that you, as an ex-Kodak person, care deeply about the photos and the colour reproduction!

I have a few copies of the first edition available.

I don't have plans yet for the second edition. I have sold many copies to individuals and institutions in many counties so the information is out there. I and the University will re-new and protect the copyright.

At least for now I only have the 1st edition for sale. These are new. The price on used 1st editions is crazy, over $1,000.
