Making a new strap?

The strap on my 5x12 project cam is coming apart. It's still pretty sturdy, but I don't trust it to use:

Anyone have any suggestions on making a new one?

Do you have a saddle shop anywhere near by? Either they could make one for you, or get you some straps (or better yet scraps) so that you could make your own. If you want to get fancy, search for the ez stitch sewing awl and get it with the heavy needle.

We have a cobbler in town who just loves to do stuff like this.Look around for a shoe repair shop in your town.

I like the cobbler idea. Any ideas where to find rivets?

Scott,
Google HERITAN and maybe TANDY. You should be able to order rivets and necessary punch from one of the two. From experience use more than one per joint.

Check ebay for leather and rivets too, you should be able to get scraps for nearly nothing. Rivets are fast, but I would probably go with stitching since you should get a stronger piece. Either way it will look nice. If you go with rivets see if you can get copper because it would look nice.

Post screws or chicago screws work great too- my wife uses them a lot on tack for her horses.

I would think you could find something conservative enough by avoiding the poodle and bulldog styles :O)

I was going to recommend a shoemaker, but realized that on my side of the pond, that's what we call cobblers.

Ironically, when I needed new straps for a briefcase my wife had had made at Harrod's in 1970, I took it to a quality shoemaker. Or cobbler. Whatever the name, he had the fasteners at hand.
