Making a 4"x10" holder

I'm going to attempt to make a 4"x10" film holder from a tatty 8"x10" holder simply(!) by sticking some thin brass film guides on a tatty old kodak holder. Could anyone tell me the film width under ISO or ANSI standards. Does anyone see a problem with this approach?

Is your camera 8x10? Have you considered using your 8x10 holders with a half darkslide? I'm photographing a book project entirely in the 4x10 format and have been using an 8x10 with a half dark slide - works great. No cutting film, no special holders or backs, I can get 4 shots per holder, etc... If you search the forums, I believe someone here has explained how to cut one from a spare darkslide (you want to be careful not to cut all the way to the handle). Bender also sells pre-cut 4x10 darkslides. You can see some of my work from this project on my Website.

Shouldn't be a problem. I did the same thing with styrene strips glued inside some older 8x10 holders. I used a 4x5 neg to give me the four inch height. I was cutting down my 4x10 from the left overs of cutting down 8x20 sheets from 12x20 sheets. This was before the current boom in having lots of sheet sizes available.

Hi Scott, yes, i'm using an 8 X 10. Having read Kerry's article in Veiw Camera i've decided against using the half darkslide approach because of bellows problems with wide angle lenses. I intend to use JandC 4x10 film.

Hi George, do you use pre cut film now? Is it the same 4" width as in 5 x 4 film i.e 3 15/16"? Or is it half of an 8 x 10 sheet i.e half 7 15/16"? I realize the difference is small, but I don't want to cut thin slivers of film from the 4 x 10 sheets because of a silly error.

I haven't shot any 4x10 since the I stopped cutting down the Illford 12x20 film. So I don't know if its half the 8x10 or smaller, this I want to find out myself.

I keep running into problems turning my 8x20 on it's side and I want to make some vertical panoramic images. So this Fall I dug out the 4x10 holders again, but haven't ordered the film yet.

Email J&C they will be able to tell you for sure and the are great to deal with.
