Hi,

The Magnifax 4 arrived today in the post  and I have managed to assemble it OK, bar the polystyrene collector. Where does this go and how do I fit it? I have dismantled the B&W Head and it doesn't seem to fit anywhere.... I wonder if I have the right size, I want to print 6x6. The collector has f-60-80 written on it, and is kinda square looking (perhaps the vendor sent me a collector of an Opemus enlarger by mistake).

I also need to check if I have the right condenser lens inserted. Has "1" imprinted into he metal surround.

The vendor included a 6x6 negative mask, so once I have sorted out the collector/condensor side I am set to roll (when my Componon-s 80/4 turns up that is).

Oh yes, and what size bulb do you recommend? Can I use household bulbs or do I have to buy a special one?

Any help much appreciated.

Hi, I have the same enlarger and it sounds like you have the right light box. On my head there are two little black screws on either side that you undo and the top half of the head lifts off. It is easier to do if the head is already fitted to the column as the bottom half stays connected and you lift the top off - a bit like taking the top off an egg! It lifts off fairly easily but you may need to wiggle it a little bit. Inside the top half you can place the light box - it just clips in to place with the plastic cover facing down. Chances are you already have a35mm light box fitted inside at the moment which you will need to pull out (unclipping the sides) first.

Good luck.

Hi, I have the B&W head and I think that the collector may only be needed for the colour or meograde heads....

Have also discovered that I have the right condenser lens (no. 1) for 6x6 but I am not sure which way up it goes. Flat side up or down?

Thanks for your help!

Hi. Since I have Magnifax 4 too...

If what you call collector looks like polyestrene box which on one side has plastic white opal "glass" in black frame, and on one side has small rectangular hole, then yes, it is mixing chamber for colour head and you don't need it for b/w head. In that case f60-80 mean it is mixing chamber for enlarging lenses 60mm - 80mm.

Right position of condenser is: Flat side of glass goes up.

Thanks, just what I wanted to know!
