For my money nothing is half do good as the bi-monthly Photo Techniques. Every other month they also cover d------.

Even though this is an old thread I had to reply, as I still get bent out of shaping thinking about this:

When Photovision (http://www.photovisionmagazine.com/) died they sent me a "gift" subscription to Outdoor Photographer. Even though I not so politely requested that they send the subscription to someone who would appreciate it, I continued to receive it for months. It is the only magazine I've ever received that I recycled without even opening.

I sent back an email telling the publisher not to send me outdoor phtographer after my Photovision ended. The next month I started getting a skiing magazine instead.

That's OK. I was a charter subscriber to OP and have continued faithfully over the years, but no more. I picked it up at the book store yesterday, flipped through it and put it down; disgusted.

Me too...you were much too kind to recycle the issues, I fed mine to the fireplace...

Many of us here got burnt also when Photovision went under. I immediately contacted them about a refund, and was told they were working on things and I would be notified. After Lee another paugger here doggedly bugged them about a refund they sent one to him in the late spring. I had not heard word one from the Photovision people up until Lee mentioned his refund. I quickly followed suit and again requested a refund. I was told that I had not previously requested one, so my unused portion of my subscription was not going to be filled by OP. I didn't want OP. I sent back an ever increasingly firm eamil that stated I HAD requested the refund and was blown off about it. After much wangling they put me on ignore, and actually sent me a refund check signed by one Steve Anchell himself.

I also did it when "Stereo Review" turned into "Sound and Vision". They wouldn't stop sending the damn thing despite my protests.

Got the latest OP replacement for Photovision today.

Total waste of paper and ink.

One publication which surprisingly hasn't been mentioned, especially on APUG is Ag. Originally 'The Silverprint magazine' I believe. Full title - "Ag - the international journal of photographic art and practice". It is edited and published by Chris Dickie under name of picture-box media.

I consider it more than a magazine, the repro and thick paper oozes quality in the 10x10 inch format. It is the one I would keep subscribing to in lieu of all others (FWIW, UK B+W is my only current other subscription).

There are no advertisements. Really.

Major photographers are featured each issue with a balance of well written articles on different aspects of photography. Eddie Ephraums, Michael Maunder (Speedibrews) are regular contributers, as was Barry Thornton, before he died. A visit to the website will give you a good indication of what you are missing http://www.ag-photo.co.uk/

It is Published quarterly with the downside is that it is expensive. Cover price is £12.50 but £37.50 for 4 issue subscription, each issue getting cheaper still if you subscribe for 2 or 3 years.

I see it as a well produced softback book, which educated and enlightens me about photography. The exception being the Tim Daly articles, which are normally on digital and I read solely on the basis that some day, based on the law of averages, he might say something of note; his skillful avoidance of matters of substance is perhaps equally artful and simultaneously, of course, downright annoying. Happily he seems happy to leave such matters to the other contributors on the features which are more of interest to APUGgers.

Using the website synopsis of back issues will help identify issues which re more to your individual taste/interests. Discounts are available on multiple orders apparently.

The only magazine I've ever subscribed to is LensWork. No fluff writing. No equipment reviews. No advertising! It's a bi-monthly publication of portfolio's...not the kind a model might carry around...these are seriously thought out sequences of photographs that tell a story, provoke thought, or communicate an emotional response the photographer had to subject matter.

I think the best way to discover what equipment, or what techniques are applicable to your images is to look through publications such as LensWork (or the fine art photography section of a really BIG library) and find the work of photographers that really get you jazzed up or motivated. Find out what equipment / techniques they use. Borrow and steal from them what will apply to your own way of seeing.

Without the ability to read or understand everything I took the time and trouble to write about Ag, it is definitely not the publication for you.

anybody else notice that the latest Photo Techniques Magazine has half of the latest issue devoted to Digital articles? Guess we all knew it was coming- didn't we?

Yeah - but did you note the article on rebuilding Omega D-II enlargers? I say that more than makes up for the digigarble.
