I have been monitoring fleabay for some time now, with the item of interest being a macro ring. My RB kit is 77mm, but I have not seen anything of this size. A few side mounted dual flash items, but no rings. To cut down on my GAS frustration level, is there a ring macro made (past or present) that is this large?

or, somewhat more practically, http://www.intro2020.co.uk/pages/sunpak3.htm but 77mm seems to be at its limit so you might want to try one first.

Cheers, Bob.

I have one of these Sunpack Ringlight units and it works ok for me - but I've never tried it on anything larger than 77mm.

There use to be the Hershey Ring Light as I recall. I can not remember the largest filte size they would fit. Additionally, I think they worked with a Norman 200B battery pack according to Photo.net. I believe they have been out of production for some time though.

Hmmmm....I should have warned you David that I have a rhythm problem with my heart. After clicking on the link, it only took two pills to get things right again!!!

The names and models provided will give me some fodder for the fleabay search tool I use (Auction Sieve). But the deal Bob posted has gotten me to thinking. Part of my hope was that the ring that Pentax made would go this large. I have a Pentax rig and Quantum battery. Unfortunately, it does not. BUT...If I were to move the flash tube out of an AF400T, replace it with another tube schema and place it in a form as shown, here is something that would keep the thyristor automation... Sounds like experiment time!!!

If all else fails I've seen plans to convert a bundt cake pan into a macro ring using a regular small flash bounced inside it. A bit of electronic wizardry could actually result in several small flash units being mounted and used on a pan. This way any size restrictions are cancelled out by finding a big enough pan and cutting the hole out before reconstruction.

Patrick,

How are you planning on using the ringlight? Does it need to be flash? Can it be an incandescent light source? The reason that I am asking is that for some close-up and macro work I have incandescent light sources with fiber optic bundles including a ring light. But these are designed in part for work with microscopes. I have a battery of macro and close-up lenses that can be mounted on several bellows for my Leica R series cameras. They can also with adapters be put into a #1 shutter for mounting on my Linhof Technikardan 45S. The Fiber optic ring light can be affixed to the lenses with adapters or locked in place with clamps. But, I do not think the ring light would accept a 77mm thread (too large). Of the macro lenses that I have they include the Schneider f4.0 50mm M Componon and the Rodenstock f4.0 75mm 1X Apo Rodagon D and the Rodenstock f4.5 75mm 2X Apo Rodagon D lenses. Just some food for thought.

I have an old mini cam pro ring light I've used on my pentax 6x7 macro lens it was a 67 or 77 mm thread as per the brochure . I ordered the 67mm. bought it from mini cam corp of america , black diamond ,washington---long gone now.this was 20 yrs ago . current manufacture looks like the sony DX12R from what I can gather
