Hello,
I have a big batch of Maco Multibrom N paper and tried to print using my Durst M805 with color head. I can not achieve the maximum black and contrast at grades #4 and #5. With the same negative Fomabrom Variant and Ilford MG gives a much more higher contrast (true #4 and #5) than Maco. On Maco i have only grade #2 with maximum set of Magenta:130CC. I use D72 1+1 and A130 1+3 for 2-5 minutes.
What am i doing wrong?

PS. Sorry for my english. This is not my native language.

Eugene.

Hi Eugene, welcome to APUG. Are you developing to completion or only by judging what you view in the tray?

I work only with exposure and use developing to completion. Also, i tried prolonged development from 4 to 6 minutes with no visible effect.

The paper might be old and have lost contrast.

The paper is 2 or 3 years old and without fog. Paper lost contrast then fog affects on light tones. I think, the problem is in emulsion or special developer needed.
Does anybody use Maco Multibrom N?

Multibrom N has been manufactured for Maco by EFKE. According to this posting from MACO they stopped collaboration and thus manufacturing of Multibrom F in 2007.
Your paper might be older than you thought. In my experience (with other papers) contrast at the higher gradations goes down without visible fog.

One could suspect that this paper is simply the same as EFKE Varycon (sold today e.g. as Adox vario classic). It is said that these paper need strong developers. You might want to try a different developer or dilution.

Andreas,
Thank you!
I'll try to find some information on this problem for Adox or Efke paper.
