There is a clock spring which turns the counter dial when the back is opened. If you are mechanically inclined, you can take the top housing off the camera and expose the dial and the spring. With a tiny screwdriver I was able to unhook the spring and wind it one extra revolution so as to give it a bit more pull. The counter dial on my camera works fine now.
I don't recommend opening up your camera unless you have a little practical experience with small mechanical things. It's kind of a pain when the counter won't reset to zero, but so long as it works at 12, 24, or 36 (depending on the film you are using), that's really all that matters.
