Ok, riddle me this everyone. I just stopped by the local 7-11 corner market type place and they have only one type of film for sale...fresh dated Kodak Gold in 110. So I am to understand that, in the eyes of Kodak, there are more people shooting 110 film than say 100UC 120? I know there's a lot going on and my post is mostly in jest, but really! Not that I think 110 shooters of the world need any more hinderance than the rest of us, but what the heck is happening in a world where you can buy 110 and not even 35mm!?!?!? HA HA. Oh well. Go Kodak! Not sure where you are going, but go Kodak.

Ummm ... I think it has less to do with Kodak than the 7-11 store. But that's just me.

When I lived in Chicago, every Wallgreens stocked 110 film like it was no tomorrow. I bought a bajillon packs. Just in case. Chicago was where I first met several other Pentax 110 users. Moved to CT and sure enough no one's ever heard of 110 film or the Pentax 110.

Who knows, there may be a secret 110 society lurking around the corner from that 7-11 ...

Speculation for speculation, I would say the answer is "maybe." Maybe there are more people on the whole who still have 110 camera in comparison with the number of pro/sumers who shoot a specialty film in a now non-amateur format. Or maybe it's just a big over stock from a while ago.

Companies have varying practices regarding sales figures. Some say a bit, some say not at all. Try your hand at calling Kodak, you might actually get a real answer.

I have yet to see anyplace that stocks film NOT stock 35mm, but for some reason I seem to notice more and more 110 out there now, or at least it's more obviously displayed than it was.

Dear tjaded,

The answer to the riddle is simple: 7-11 believes that there is a market for 110 film. Kodak doesn't decide what is sold at 7-11.

You should realize that with the improvements in Gold, the current films are far better than the ones originally introduced with 110, thereby making 110 pictures more attractive. (sharper with less grain)

I'm not justifying anything, nor am I saying that the 110 pictures compare with 35mm, only that there has been a big improvement in the film over the years.

My guess is that the owner of the store just ordered the cheapest film available, not knowing what 110 was. Without having any other film in the place, that seems most likely. Again, my original post was pretty much just for sharing what I saw as odd. The whole experience was kinda of surreal, seing only 110 film, no 35mm, and seeing that 110 behind the counter between condoms and home pregnancy test kits. I just left the place laughing...

I have the feeling that whoever at your 7-11 ordered the film accidentally typed in "110" on the order form instead of "120". (after all, 1 & 2 are right next to each other on the keyboard) Then again, if they DID mean to type in "120", that would be the first time I've ever heard of 120 film being available in a 7-11.

It would take all the fun out of this thread, but one could contact the owner of the 7-11 and ask why 110 was supplied and not 120 or 135. :confused:

san francisco is the place to be if you're into 110.
i think every walgreens i've been to, maybe a dozen, all stock it, as does rite aid as well!

Yeah, most Walgreens stores have it 2 rolls for $5--it's rebranded to have their logo on it, but they don't process or print it! They will send it out, but it takes a couple weeks. A guy that I used to work with bought a big box of toy "spy cameras" that use 110...now I'm trying to get the holder for the Fuji Frontier machine at work so we could print from 110, too.

On a similar line, I have noticed a lot more 126 coming in for processing recently. Is anyone still making 126 cassettes?

I do see drug stores selling APS, which I have a feeling that even fewer people use. Who knows, maybe somebody is shooting these odd film formats.

People still shoot APS and 110, but a lot than than ten years ago. For the consumer APS is easier to use than 135 but to me not enough to sacrifice image quality. Working in a lab APS actually takes a little bit more time to completely process. My guess is that the 7-11 would been better off selling 4x5 film instead of 110. The wonderful things that can be done with larger format appeal to artists.

Ferrania (Solaris brand) is the only company still making 126, they also have 110 & APS formats. I believe they use Kodak Gold 200 stock. Would not surprise me if they are the OEM of the Kodak 110

Ferrania Solaris film is actually coated by Ferrania. They have a coating plant in Oklahoma, as well as Italy. I have heard they are discontinuing their 126 size.

where do you work?
i didn't think anyone in the city still processed 126...i've been mailing it all to vermont color

I have a few roll myself that need developing was going to send them to Film for Classics.

Should any lab with a dip tank be able to process 126? Also, it’s about the same size as 35mm so why would it not work in a roller machine other that the tech not being comfortable handing it.

Newlab, 651 Bryant. We don't list it on the price list...just figure on it being the price of 120 ($5 per roll.) C-41 or E-6. 3 hour turnaround. If you call for info, ask for Matt (that's me!)

We use dip and dunk, it's just a holder for the printing that we are getting (if I am not mistaken, it will do 110 also. I hope it does!)

What I can't figure out is WHY did Kodak kill 126 and not 110? I mean 110 has got to be the world's worst foresaken format still in use. 126 at least had a bigger negative. But instead of killing both, or chosing the wrong one, Kodak left us with 110. All I can say is at least disc film died a quick death. We at the lab will be having a party when we hear 110 and APS film have been cut.
