Misery loves its company I guess. I sold my Lubitel 166 a while ago. It was close to impossible to focus. I'd rather have fun with my Diana and Holgas than with something like the Lubitel.

I wished I profited but I think I lost. The Lubitel was okay, I just had a hard time focusing the darn thing. I wonder if those Ricohs and Autocords are ....hmmmmm

I was kidding - it is a huge pain to focus. I found some tricks that help - but mainly taking photos at infinity

Using a Lubitel

-Find a picturesque view at infinity
-close down the aperture as small as it will go
-point in vague direction of the intended shot
-As an option flick up the 'loupe :confused: and find the image in the user friendly ground glass roundel and move the focus ring, just to make you feel like a photographer.
-find the finely precisioned shutter cocking lever (you have to have done it to understand)
-ditto shutter release
-repeat process just in case

I had a Lubitel 66 once, I bought it out of curiosity and thought it was an excellent camera for a beginner, I gave it to my nice who was about seventeen at the time, showed her how to use it, that was about sixteen years ago ,it started her on the road to what eventually lead to a degree in photography and film studys from The London College Of Printing.

Jokes aside, it was my first "real" camera, and yes, it can be a pain, but I often get the "really? that was taken with Lubitel?" reaction. I believe even in the APUG gallery. Plus, you will not make a nice photo by accident - you have to work for it - which I think is a great learning feature. Another thing to consider is the incredible rane of quality control that seems to plague a lot of the Soviet equipment. And to be honest, I think it actually went down hill after the wall fell. Perhaps I was a awe-struck child, but I do not recall my original Lubitel being as cantenkerous as my current one.

BTW - good call on the shutter-cocking lever! Its more of a little tiny joystick!
