Hi,

I just purchased a used LPL 7700MX, but it did not come with the manual.

I wonder if someone can help with filtration guide?
Which color settings correspond to which contrast grade.

Also any thoughts on the difference between the universal glass vs. glassless negative carriers? I've been using glassless for some time, but wonder if glass can makes a difference

Thank you !!!

You will find that information on the data sheet which comes with the paper rather than in the enlarger manual but basically, more magenta = more contrast, more yellow = less contrast.

Apparently different enlarger types have different combinations i.e. Durst is different from LPL and so forth.
I have never seen any such data sheets with Ilford or Foma papers I use.

Thanks, Igor

With every box of Ilford paper I have bought there has always been an information sheet. At the bottom on one side they give filter values for variable contrast papers. One set for single filter values and another for dual filter values. They list values for several enlargers, Durst, Kodak, Meopta, Leitz etc but not LPL. For the LPL enlarger use the Kodak values.

I have never seen any such data sheets with Ilford or Foma papers I use.

Every box of Ilford paper I have ever used had a data sheet and...... fumbles around in cupboard for a packet of Foma paper...... wait a minute whilst I open it..... there is also a data sheet here!

GRADE.......1........2.......3........4.........5
DURST.....40Y....20Y....20M....60M....130M
MEOPTA...80Y....50Y....20M....60M....130M

Hope that lines up properly. EDIT: It didn't so I added some dots.

It doesn't really matter which scale you use but it would make sense to use the same one all the time. Or don't bother knowing which grade it is. Do a trial with no filtration (which the table above would indicate as being grade 2.5) and add magenta to increase contrast or add yellow to decrease.

You will need to do a test strip each time you change the filtration as the more you filter the light, the longer the exposure will need to be.

I never paid attention to the info supplied with the paper, but obviously it is there.
I previously used LPL D6700 and had filtration for its head, not knowing it could be paper specific as well.
Thank you very much for replies; very useful and eye opening (feel even embarrassed a bit now

It was my first post in APUG. What a nice community it is I have to say …

Basically, the US made enlargers follow the Kodak standard for cc filters. So Beseler and Omega (and Saunders LPL by extension) will follow the Kodak standard. Ilford does give comprehensive data for color head settings for a few standards, Kodak's included. Here's the tech sheet for Multigrade IV RC. The same sort of data is there for all there other VC papers. Foma has it in their tech sheets too. find it here for Fomabrom Variant III FB.

Dear Igor,

Free yourself from the concept of specific paper grades. If you need more or less contrast, just dial it in.
