Lowe pro Super Trekker AW II

Has anyone used this backpack with an 8x10 field camera, lenses, holders, etc.? What do you think of it? Many thanks.

I have the super trekker, and it work great for 8x10 - holds my Zone VI ultralight, 3 lenses, meter, filters, DSLR body and 3 lenses, and in the daypack, I carry 6 8x10 film holders. I have a second bag I carry my other 4 holders is. I don't carry my tripod on the back (it is a heavy manfrotto 075) but when I replace that with a Carbon Fibre, I will shift to having the tripod on the bag too.

Here's my dissenting opinion. I have a Lowepro Pro Trekker, which has the same suspension as the super trekker. Coming from a mountaineering background, the suspension on the pack sucks. I've started carrying my gear in a regular old rucksack by dana design. I'm also in the market for a good padding system. I have my eye on the dividers from pelican cases.

I didn't think it would be the same suspension since their advertising brags that compared to the Pro Trekker the Super Trekker AWII was recently rebuilt from the ground up.

With luck I can manipulate the insides to take a Wisner 12x20 at some point in the future. I ordered one a few days ago from the same company in Ebay as you did Sean. My f64 is spent! No one who regularly backpacks with an 8x10 should buy that bag - it simply disintegrates after some heavy use. I am excited to get the ST AWII as I now have a few more lenses I need with me in the field.

How far are you guys hiking with your whole kit? I take what I think I'll need, and leave the rest in the trunk of the car. Basically ends up being the camera on the tripod over my shoulder with my dark cloth folded up to make a nice pad. Small backpack with my meter, a few film holders, filters, and notebook. I can't see hiking any distance with my whole kit on my back.

I always plan my trips to involve a mximum hike of about 5km with my gear (8x10, 6 holders, 2 lenses, accessories, and tripod), stopping now and then to rest or to just take in the surroundings. Most of the places I visit do not allow cars to come anywhere near them.

Sean, have you weighed yours with your gear in it yet? I tried out a Kelty 2650 at the sporting goods store tonight. We weighed it with my dorff 8x10, 4 holders, 2 lenses, meter and loupe and it was about 24lbs. Add 7.5 for the tripod, and I am over 31lbs :O I didnt like the way it fit my body, and am going to wait and see what their next shipment looks like (different bags). The kelty is a weekend hiking internal frame pack, and costs between $75 and $100 depending on where you get it,

I looked at the Lowepro bags mentioned here and spoke with an owner who found it a bit heavy. So I opted for a Kinesis Journeyman. It holds my Arca-Swiss F-line, 5 lenses, filters, film, cloth, extra bellows, etc, and weighs 25 llbs. The harness is IMHO much more comfortable than the Lowe Pro.

I think everything I have with the tripid hooked to the pack was like 39lbs. SOunds heavy but I walked up and down the street and it didn't phase me..

Walking up and down the street is not the same as hiking through the backcountry. I have about 50 pounds in the super trekker and an additional 10 in hand (tri-pod) I have finally decided to reduce the weight and only carry what I need. Believe me when you start climbing you will wish you only brought what you needed. There is no problem getting to the destination with the pack on, getting back is the bummer especially if it is all uphill.

I pack is very comfortable and does distribute the weight evenly. I would highly recommend the Super Trekker but remember just do not over pack it.

I did the exact same thing when I first got it. I loaded it up and walked about 3 miles around where I lived on paved road and it didn’t seem that bad. But when taking it into the field after a few months now and climbing gaining elevation it is really different especially at high altitudes as the air thins out.

Again it is an awesome pack just do not over pack it as it is easy to do.
