Looking for softbox holder for my continious light.

I bought a light bulb holder today. I thought it would come with the softbox holder that I saw in the shop display but it didn't come with, I would have to buy the soft box for that (but I have softboxes enough).

Now I am trying to find one softbox holder that I can attach to my new system but I can't find it.

It is something like in this picture but with 3 pins to couple into the bulb holder holes.

Do you know what I am talking about and where can I find it online?

From the sound of it what you need is a speed ring to adapt your softbox to your lamp, and with three pins, that sounds like a Bowens S-mount fitting. I could be wrong on that, though, and what you need might well be proprietary to your lamp. The reason I think of the Bowens S-mount is that it is extremely popular, and the closest thing to an industry standard fitting. If the Bowens style speed ring is not what you need, you'll have to bite the bullet and buy the one from the maker of your system. If the Bowens is what you want, there are lots of sources for such things. B&H Photo, Amazon and Ebay are good sources for these. I believe Fotodiox (a Chinese camera gear maker) makes decent quality but inexpensive speed rings to fit these.

Ok- that's a proprietary mount. I think you'll have to just get the one they're selling and end up with an extra softbox. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing- not all softboxes are made to take the heat of a tungsten lamp and might melt/catch fire if used with too powerful a bulb. If they're selling one with the kit, it's probably made to take the heat from your lamp.

But I would be limited to only one softbox, meaning that I would need to replace all the 3 soft-boxes I have.

I wonder if it would not be worth buying a more universal system so I can use speed rings easier to find. Anyway... I see what I can get in the store tomorrow.

Generally speaking speed rings are universal as far as the accessories they connect to the lamp, but are specific on the connection to the lamp. So your other softboxes would still be compatible with the speed ring, I'm guessing. Depending on how big they are, the speed ring may not be the limiting factor, but the weight of the softbox could be more than the lamp can handle. If the box is too heavy for the lamp, you wouldn't be able to position the lamp and have it stay in that setting for very long.

You may be able to adapt a speed ring with some bolts and washers and a drill and duct tape and JB weld, etc etc… you can usually find speed rings on eBay for $20 or so. Just keep in mind that rectangular and square softboxes can work with the 4-hole rings (referring to the holes where the poles go) - tall/narrow strip lights and octagon lights need the 8-hole models (which also work with rectangular & square boxes).

And I'll re-emphasize FlyingCamera's comment about heat - many softboxes are designed for a maximum of, say, 250 watts. My speedotron heads have 250 watt modeling lamps so no problem there - but I've been on sets where softboxes have ignited and that is no fun (though i think it was a case of an old softbox and an internal layer came loose and rested on the modeling light). 250 watts doesn't go very far in a soft box for actual exposure.

With some softboxes, removing the inner baffle will let you go hotter. But be careful not to exceed the rating. If you are using fluorescent bulbs, you can roughly calculate the wattage - multiply the flo's wattage by 3 or 4 (a 60 watt flo is about equivalent to a 200 watt globe - but will be much cooler). For ballasted lights like HMI, HID, etc - the heat output is about the same - IE a 575 HMI puts out about the same heat as a 575 tungsten globe (just 3-4 times more light).

Photoflex and Chimera's hot light softboxes can take 1000 watts - the newer Fotodiox pro boxes can take 500.

I actually bought the softbox with the speed ring. But then I asked about my other softboxes for flash and the shop called the distrubutor who said that as far I use sunlight bulbs it is ob because they don't get too hot as Helios bulbs.
