Has anyone had any luck making washi or gampi paper permanently translucent?

If you wish to take an archival approach, consider konnyaku or even tapioca starch. Both are heated in water to boiling and then cooled, and brushed on. The paper will be a lot more brittle but will never yellow. You can even crumple and open the paper multiple times to get a very textured effect.

I made a sheet of window privacy frosting once by spraying a sheet of interesting Japanese tissue paper with clear spray varnish.
