Looking for a starting point on development

I know these are OLD and all will be variable, but interested in what you have to say.

Purchased years ago from people claiming it had been frozen or refrigerated

My intent is to use D23 once I get started.

My total guess is 9-10 mins, but really don’t know.

It's probably OK. Assuming you have a darkslide, you can make a "step-table" of 3-5 exposures on one sheet starting at 1-2 "f-stops" lower than the ISO and adding exposures with less exposure up to the ISO. You can photograph an average scene (correctly metered) -- or a grey card), and develop normally.

It's possible that the J&C Classic has higher base fog. I have 100 and 400 J&C 8x10 sheet film, that has high fog. A small amount of Benzotriazole in the developer, takes care of most of it.

@JMC1969 if you go the Benzo route, I have found that 10ml of a 1% solution in 500ml of developer cuts through a lot of the fog. You will have to increase development time a bit, to make up for the loss of speed and densities. For example, I had to increase Shanghai 100's development time by 30%. The resulting base fog was much easier to deal with...something that is pretty important for Alt. printing, but not so when I print on gelatin silver papers...

When I say "normally", I mean not something unusual -- like using the recommended time for a different developer or different film.

I think the J&C was rebranded Foma or Forte, I would shoot each at 1/2 ISO to compensate for age, MDC does not have times for Forte but has times for Foma 100 and 200 in D23, as a starting point for 100 ISO 50 at 68 degrees 11 m for 200 7 mints. There are sort of best guesses as the folks who posted the times may or may have used a scientific approach.

Thank you. This is very helpful. My guess of 9 mins was based on other threads I read referring to j&c like txp and that D23 used close times as D76.

I am trying to get close since I could not find a reference to these film/developer combo for normal processing.

I have a min of 50 sheets in each speed, so I can afford to do a little testing.

I use D76 + 10% times for films without a D23 time. It is hard to block the highlights with D23. I do the same with D23 1:1.
