Looking for a small freezer... Ay suggestions

I'm looking for a freezer about the size of a college dorm fridge... Something small and cheap

Any suggestions?

I think you could get by with a dorm size fridge and just turn it all the way down/up (to the coldest setting, IOW. )

I recently helped my parents look for the smallest freezer we could possibly find. Unless there is something I didn't run across, the smallest we found is 5 Cubic Feet. Just slightly bigger than the small dormroom fridges. It was about three feet tall, and in the class of what's referred to as a "freezer chest". Around $150 if I recall.

I got one from Sears I think, but about 5 years ago. Dorm fridges are easy to find. Dorm-sized freezers no. Cheapest are the ones that are not "frost-free" but since I'm guessing you want it for film that should not be a problem since you will likely not open multiple times a day like a typical fridge. Just Google search for them.

I'm sure you'd be able to find a table top freezer from a local(ish) supplier. I'm guessing you wouldn't want to ship from Europe..

Sears is probably your best bet for a small deep freeze. The smallest are the chest type about 5 cubic feet. They dont hold as much as you think, and everything stacks up since there are no shelves. I prefer an upright, shelves are easy to organize.

We bought a small freezer where I work that was listed as a medical freezer. It had the capability to maintain -20F° (important for our duty) and wasn't as pricey as I thought it would be (around $200). It has a locking door and is about dorm fridge size. Perhaps versions that don't go quite so cold would be sufficient and a bit lower priced, too?

It looks a lot like this one.... The temperature capability we needed was beyond this one in the link, though. For film storage, this one would likely work well, I would think.

I found a 5 cu ft freezer at a used furniture/antique store for $75. It's not beautiful but keeps a lot of film and paper at -5F. No need to defrost in more than 2 years and it doesn't use a whole lot of electricity, either. It made my wife very happy to get her big chest freezer back. ;-)

you did not specify where you are from, but the best bet is ao call around to local chain hardware/Houseware stores, Like Canadian Tire, Lowes, Home Depot, home Hardware. The small fridges are more common than freezers. A local RV dealer also comes to mind, but the norm for RV use is dual voltage so if they had any it would be more expensive.

I have an inexpensive "holiday" brand chest freezer from lowes. I bought it for it's combination of energy efficiency and low price. We store film, ice cream, and meat in it.

I picked up a used dorm size refer at a yard sale for $20. I keep it set at 28f and stash most of my film in it. My excess film and paper is stored in our large deep freeze, and my wife is constantly telling me we don't have room for food in it(20cf chest freezer).

I just bought a 5 cu ft Frigidaire from Best Buy on sale for just under $150. Uses $26 of electricity a year, and I can defrost it when needed. Perfect for my film and paper needs.

It gets a little harder for we ULF guys.... When my wife purchased a second full size refrigerator to keep in the garage I confiscated the freezer compartment and filled it with 8x10 enlarging paper and smaller films such as 4x5, 220 and 35mm. Next my bride wanted a full size freezer for the garage. I confiscated the top shelf and filled it with 11x14 and 16x20 enlarging papers. Then ULF (7x17) photography entered the picture. I ordered a bunch of 7x17 TMY during Kodak's special run in 2006. When it came in 16x20 boxes I wondered how the he'll ami gonna store this stuff. Then came J&C's moving sale and I purchased enough film at the 40% off level that I "saved" enough to pay for a full size frost free freezer. It's filled with 7x17 film ( stored 40 sheets per 16x20 box), 8x20 boxes of Lodima, 8x10 TMY film, 5x7 TMY film and other small format b&w films.

They could stop making film and paper tomorrow and it would likely be 20 years before I noticed. Buy a freezer, pack it with your favorite emulsions. You won't be sorry.
