Hi Guys-

With winter break approaching, I am looking at hopefully taking my camera and I somewhere where I can experience a new place and some new scenes. I would say that I would generally be looking to do landscape type work as I am growing more interested in shooting large format, but really it is quite open. I am looking for a place/places to visit by car from the Boston area. Any ideas that you guys want to throw out of places where you have enjoyed visiting would be great!

Thanks,

Pat

I found the deserts of southwest USA to be interesting and totally different from the temperate forest region where I live.

How far are you looking to go?
For day trips;
The Quabbin Reservoir is nice.
There are some good spots around Brattleboro, VT, Stickney Brook is one spot, though I'm not sure what it's like this time of year. Also, if you go up VT route 5 there are tons of views of the Connecticut river and picturesque farms.
Portsmouth, NH for slightly more urban landscapes.
Western Mass, west of I91, I don't know specific locations out there though.

There is, of course, George Eastman Museum that has a lot of history on photography. And, if you pick the day right, you might catch Mark and Nick having lunch in the cafe. They can show and tell a lot.

Near Boston is Cape Anne with Motif #1.

But the southwest US is better than Boston could ever be.

Montreal Canada is spectacular, if you don't mind cold weather. Five hours from Boston.

Personally, I'd rather drive south. I've done several road trips from Ontario to SC and FL during winter breaks, with buddies, fiancee, and with family.

Niagara Falls after the wind has caused the icicles to form in a bent twisted form.

Thanks for the suggestions! I have been so some of the closer places mentioned around MA such as Cape Anne. I will definitely head to Cape Cod a few times. Definitely a favorite place.
Anyone been up to Acadia National Park? That is one idea I had. Also thinking about going down to the DC Area.

Escaping the ice and snow by driving somewhere where there is more ice and snow? Does not compute.

frank,
the OP never said he wanted to escape the ice and snow, he said he wanted a change of scene
and his usual scene is southern massachusetts and boston, from what i remember.

John, for me during the winter, the term "change of scenery" means escaping snow and ice. I understand that the OP may be limiting himself to day trips or an overnighter, but he did not specify that in his post. He needs to think bigger, IMO!

What about the Adirondacks or the White Mountains? I love the Adirondacks in winter (along with spring, summer, & fall). I've only been to the White Mountains a few time but it's a beautiful place also.

I went to Acadia in October one year and they were rolling up the sidewalks for the winter then. There would have to be some places open all winter, but check first if you plan on staying overnight. My friends and I were the last guests in a chain hotel before it closed for the winter. But it was gorgeous and would probably still have nice scenes even in the winter. You might need 4WD, though, if it gets snowy.

Out between Albany and Syracuse in NY, the Mohawk River has some very nice scenes, too. In Little Falls, there's a lock in the barge canal that's old and big (it was the 3rd highest at one point in its history). Right next to it are some great rocks and an area of potholes left by the receding glaciers. Google Moss Island and you should be able to find more info on it.

You should be able to reach the airport by car from Boston -- I suggest New Zealand...it is the end of Spring there!

Ooops, then don't go north. Sorry!
