I need something that will meter with a SM lens attached for now AND I'll probably P/U an AF lens later. I would prefer something smaller with a better build body. I'm looking to spend around $250 or less. Thanks.

For $250 you can get any model up to an EOS 3, which is every model except a 1V. Not sure which are the next-most expensive after those two, maybe a 1N. All of those are about the biggest around though. Below them, a 5 can go for as little as $50. After that, they're all cheaper and smaller...

What's an "SM" lens?

Possibly a typo for 'STM'?
If so, there's nothing special about them as far as metering goes, it's just a new type of AF motor (after micromotor and USM).
Or if it stands for 'Screw Mount', then they'll also meter fine.
I use both my 40/2.8 STM and many adapted Screw Mount lenses (eg Takumar) with no problems on my EOS 3.

SM stands for screwmount lens. Adapters are available for the Canon bodies. I've got one that I really like and would like to use it on a body that will meter with it on.
The reason I ask is that KEH does not tell me which bodies it will meter on and sometimes it's just easier to ask and get opinions. I didn't see any mention in the Canon museum as well. Thanks.

There's a thing that I've discovered with using adapted lenses on my EOS 3 that might help.
On the lensmount on the camera, there is a little switch (somewhere, maybe 10 o'clock looking at the body).

I'm not sure which way around it works because I don't have my body with me, but in short, if your adapter pushes this switch it (does / doesn't) expect an AF lens or adapter with a chip. If it does push this switch and your adapter (doesn't / does) have an AF chip, then it will throw a BC error.
Conversely, if it doesn't push the switch then the inverse is true.
(I think if it pushes the switch it needs the chip but can't confirm it until I get home).
Basically, no matter what adapter you get, if it doesn't work, you can solve the problem with either a toothpick and superglue, or by filing the adapter a bit.

My Elan IIe meters with adapted OM lenses, while my Elan 7e won't.

You can get a 1N without the vertical grip to save weight and bulk, as well as money. It's still not going to be light, but it won't be an absolute monster to haul around. Next best choice would be an Elan II - while the A2/A2e is a very competent camera, it puts you right back in the 1N territory size and weight wise.

I have the Canon Elan11e body if you are interested. It is in mint condition
