March/April 2006 Photo Techniques page 9 has a simple one page primer, the first part of two, on extending development times. The authors, Dickerson and Zawadzki, former Kodak researchers, promise some details and some myth busting in the second installment. Probably not a lot new for most APUGgers in the first installment, which just explains the basics of edge effects, and talks about generalized effects on film speed and grain, but the following article might be interesting.

Although this article does not have a lot of detail (maybe more coming in future issues of PT), the fact that the procedure is endorsed by two former Kodak researchers does provide a certain degree of scientific credibility to what many of us who have been experimenting with dilute solutions and long development times have known for a long time, i.e. with the right conditions of developer, dilution and type of agitation, both maximum emulsion speed and enhanced sharpness are possible.

That section of PT is worth the subscription money!
I love photography myths, and Silvia & Dick provide lots of insight info.

Their article on the genesis of Xtol was fantastic, lately they published one about pushing film that wa s a winner IMHO

I'm in California ... have'nt got my March/April issue. Guess I'd better check my subscription; couldn't find it on the web. Gotta see this article. Thanks for the heads-up.
