Over the last year or so I have noticed a steady increase the number of APUG members and sympathisers in my local area (Central/Western Canada). I believe we are now reaching the point were an APUG meeting/gathering/shoot/whathaveyou would be very well recieved.
So what are your suggestions? What kind of event would be a good way to start things off? A simple meeting? Organized shooting day(s)? workshops? Print exchange? All of the above?
I run a photography school and have all the facilities for darkroom and studio work from 35 to 8x10, from silver to platinum. A local lab is also interested in helping out (E6, colour prints etc.) and a local retailer would be tickled pink to participate.
So what would be your suggestions to get a sort of Central Prairies APUG gathering off the ground?
I knew that there was a section for regional groups somewhere on the site but I could not find it (must have been the single malt). I found it after a bit of digging (under "community"). I will post something there.
However, I would still like to get feedback from anyone who has organized or attended a regional event as to what works and what doesn't as well as any suggestions they may have for organizing the whole shebang.
As one organizer for the Mid-Atlantic APUG group, I can say we've had success by doing two things: One, getting the word out, and Two, being dogged about scheduling an event and sticking to it. I think it helps alot by having the nature of the event and a firm schedule well decided in advance - most people are joiners, not leaders, and will be glad to show up for the beer and pretzels, but if you offer too many choices, nobody will come.
