Lith printing materials update (also of interest to many B&W printers)

I just mentioned this on Pure Silver, in response to a post there, and it occurs to me that it could be of interest here too. Hope that is OK.

I have just finished an update for the lith printing materials (mostly warmtone) list that I published in my last book, as 6 months on there have already been a lot of changes - AND there is quite a bit of breaking news about new products, new labels, and 'Lazarus' (returning from the dead!) products - something fairly new in the silver world and coming about as a reaction to the demise of some big names, like Agfa and Forte. Some of this (Agfa/Fotoimpex) you will know, but some you won't (PWT/Kentmere) as it hasn't been announced before.

This year should see several new products. It's nice to have positive news for the darkroom these days!

This update is too long to post here (4 pages) and was due to go out to my mailing list this morning, but just in case anyone on this list would like a copy and isn't on my list I will hold it up until tomorrow morning (Sunday a.m. UK time) to give anyone time to register on the list if they wish.
It is quite free of course and registration is simply for information dissemination and your emails are safe.

That's OK. It's frightening how quickly information on this has changed in 6 months. I guess digital folk are used to this sort of rapid change, but normally we 'darkroomers' aren't!
Sadly there isn't any central data base for this sort of thing and most people just don't have any way of knowing month by month what paper does what - or even what paper is what!

Hi Tim

We are doing well here , very busy year, went to Silver and yes we did ok this year as well in the competition. We are hoping that next year Silver will be joined with a couple of other conferences. Turn out was a bit dissapointing, I was really looking forward to seeing you again and did not know until I arrived in Pasadena that you were not going to be there.
I just finished some tri toning of my solarization project , got all the info from your book on toning and everything worked well.
The Bleach stage in the Sommerville Blue toner almost knocked me out , boy was the fumes strong,.
I really like the look of the tri tone on two dev solarization and am now going to proceed with the production of 30x40 murals using your toning methods for the final look.
We are hoping to bring you over in 2008 winter, so you can see some real snow and help pay your travel with a Toronto winter workshop. Les Mclean and Bill Schwab are here end of June and we want to start doing 3-4 workshops a year.

I see that there are 5 or 6 people that signed up after the posting time so I'll wait a day of so and send it out again to those who signed up late, but I really don't want to keep doing this every few days, so if anyone else is interested, please sign up now. You won't be bombarded with Rudman spam, maybe a couple of emails a year or so at most I would guess.

I hope to get a personal site up this year and will probably transfer the mailing list across and get an 'unsubscribe' facility included so if there is then any risk of increasing numbers of emails being sent with the change of site focus, anyone can simply opt out.

Clarification on some of the content of my lith materials update

For clarification:
As stated, the mailing I sent out was primarily intended for readers of the last Lith book, to update the lists in the book. It doesn't include the original lists - only the updates. As this includes some future product plans, it will probably be of interest to others too, regardless of whether they lith print.

I want to add that the information contained is to the best of my knowledge correct at the time of writing, but future plans can, and sometimes do, come unstuck and go astray, as was the case for different reasons with a couple of items in the book - the new Art Classic replacement and the new Rollei plans for example. The future plans for each of these are included in this list and in both cases the information came directly from source, not rumour.

However, I have today received a (rather cross sounding) private email refuting the information I included about the Kentmere-PWT plans. So please note that I was very careful to add a note of caution here and to say that things had reached the stage described to me with reasonable confidence as 'final negotiations' - BUT that nothing is ever final until it is final! Or as I put it 'Its not over until the fat lady sings!'
It now occurs to me that this phrase may not be known to readers whose first language is not English! I should have thought of this, so let me apologise if any confusion arose. This news came direct from source in the last 2 days and hopes are reasonably high that it will come about - and I am sure many of us will wish it so too.

Why surprising Jon? In some ways its easier than straight lith in fact. At least you get to do it all in the light!
