In order to help each other in the Irish region of Apug, I thought we should list any suppliers we have used and what goods they sell.

For film, paper, chemicals and darkroom equipment:

Gunns in Wexford Street Dublin are great. Louise and John are very helpful and always have time for their customers.

Online options which I also use are www.retrophotographic.com and www.silverprint.co.uk

Carriage can sometimes be expensive from these online suppliers so maybe post a thread and ask if other members need any supplies so you can split the carriage charge between you. I have done this and its great.

For studio equipment:

Contact Paddy at www.barkerphotographic.ie for all your studio equipment needs.

Mounting Materials & Frames:

www.framingfantastic.co.uk supply the Arqadia range of mounting boards that range from budget to Museum quality. They also sell plastic bages which can be sealed for protecting prints for sale etc.

There are many online suppliers of mounting materials in the US but I have only found one who would send materials to Ireland and that was www.archivalmethods.com They make excellent quality Cotton Fibre mounting boards.

Please add to this thread any suppliers you have used.

Photographic holidays

For anyone wishing to take a photographic tour of Ireland, check out Dead Link Removed

Focus on Ireland operate various tours in different parts of Ireland and will bring you to some great sites which are not your usual places which can get over-run with tourists. They can also tailor make a tour to suit your tastes.

When comparing their prices to other similar tours, they are very reasonable.

I have no financial interest in their business but I know the people involved and can only say they are decent folk.

Gunn's Camera Shop, Dublin

Analog supplies are not so easily obtained in Southern Ireland. With a small population here and being so close to the UK and their mail order firms, over the counter stock has never been diverse or abundant. Much less so nowadays.

Fortunatly one shop that stands ahead of any other is Gunn’s in Dublin’s Wexford Street [Opposite Whelan’s Pub and a 5 minute walk from St Stephen’s Green]. Talk to any traditional film photographer in Dublin for 10 minutes and Gunn’s will be mentioned, such is their commitment to film.

Nowhere would anyone find service as warm and friendly, the shop is family run and they certainly know (and love) their photography. They have a lab in-house and cover all the bases.

Products Stocked:
35mm: color/b+w, most brands
MF: color/b+w, most brands
LF: small amounts of b+w/color, phone them to order
Darkroom: Plenty of RC/FB b+w papers
Chemicals: Many brands of general b+w chemistry, toners etc, phone for special orders
Gunn’s also stock second hand items, darkroom accessories, filters, tripods etc.

Phone in Ireland 01 4781226
Phone International + 353 1 4781226

Do they have a website?

Will they post to England?

Steve.

They don't have a website or email Steve, I'm sure they would post to you but as their stock originates in the UK probably I'm sure you would be better with a UK supplier. Unless of course you are coming to Ireland and want to avoid nasty x-rays etc and collect your stuff here. Essentially I posted the info for anyone visiting this country.

Infrared film source?

Hi all,

I was just speaking to Gunn's (sourcing some film for a customer) and they tell me that they no longer stock Infrared film as their supplier says it's not being manufactured. They still process Infrared film but can only offer Ilford SFX.

Does anyone know of a local (Irish) stockist - any suggestions Peter?

Thanks

David

I presume you are referring to the Kodak HIE film. I think it is still being made but not being imported to Ireland anymore. I don't know of any other Irish retailers who would have it.

Online options would be www.silverprint.co.uk or www.freestylephoto.biz

I just gave freestyle an order yesterday for 25 rolls of 120 Efke and Rollei IR films and could have got you some HIE had I known in time. The order was dispatched today so too late to add to it, sorry.

Peter,

Thanks for the information. I don't need the film until August so I have time to arrange it.

more suppliers and a questionb

Another supplier for infrared is B+H. I am not sure what they charge for post to Ireland as I have used them in the states. They are out of NYC. I had a question for anyone out there paying mind...do you know of any labs in Dublin which process 120 B+W and color and/or 4x5 B+W and color? Thanks! L

Any good CLA shops in Ireland

Hi,

Can anyone recommend and good place to bring a 35mm for a CLA. I have an old Minolta SR1 (approaching 40 years old) and I'm thinking it could do with a CLA in the new year.

Any suggestions?

Hi

I got a couple of OM's repaired and serviced with these folk, it took about 3-4 weeks and cost about £100 per camera but they came back in beautiful order. They're helpful on the phone too

Processing of 120/135

I found Hand Imaging to be very friendly and helpful, especially now, when many local pharmacies no longer take film in to be processed, let alone stock it.

http://www.handimaging.com/

Downloadable pricelist on their site. If you're doing your own scanning, it's dead cheap to have them just process only.

Any one doing Hasselblad repairs in Ireland? Will be in Ireland for the month of May 09, and just thought I'd check in case of a problem.
Thanks, Bill

Hi,

almost six years since the last post.

Today I brought my nephew in to Gunns to buy his first few rolls of Ilford B+W film.

Mr. Gunn himself was behind the counter and he couldn't have been more helpful.

Apparently demand for film in Dublin is growing in recent times.

Take care...

Not bad that a traditional retailer is still going strong given it is 8 years since Gunns was mentioned and even better that Mr Gunn was still behind the counter. In terms of the speed of rate of change 8 years used to be the blink of an eye. A mere instant over which time little changed. Now it's a lifetime :D

Just came across this thread again and realised I never mentioned my online shop which was started in 2011. I stock pretty much everything you need for film and darkroom users. Www.thephotoshop.ie

Many thanks for this thread! I'm on my way to Ireland for vacation, it's nice to know a good source for film.
