There seems to be some friction in my shutter release cable that prevents the shutter release lever on the lens from returning after an exposure (see below image). The shutter release cable is fine when perfectly straight but doesn't return properly when there's a slight bend in the cable.

Is there any way to lubricate a shutter release cable? I'd replace it if it wasn't a Linhof cable made to lock into the anatomical grip.

Perhaps some powdered graphite?

It might be dirt bunging it up needing cleaning , rather than needing lubricant .
Adding stuff could bung it up even more .
I'd be inclined to try clean it first with something that evaporates easily.
A bit of alcohol might be the first option , or possibly lighter fluid , dribble it down the end then push and pull the end to free it up whilst any dirt is dispersed.
A few applications might flush it out .

If cleaning doesn't work , then possibly try adding a lubricant .

It sounds also that you might have kinked the wire inside it slightly , so when it's curved it gets stuck , but whilst straight it just about manages to move freely.

Can you feel any lumps along it's length ?

Perhaps, first clean the tip and the nipple which is in the holder near the lens with some lighter petrol to dissolve the older lubrication which might have stiffen over time. The yellowish/brownish precipitate one can see in your picture indicates older grease (and some dirt sticking in it too)...
