Light Seals

Other discussions about light leaks in A12 mags got me to thinking. I know that the knowledgeable folk here state, without equivocation, to buy only genuieyne OEM Hassy light seals, despite what some of the vendors chirp on eekBay. When that time comes, I know what to do.

But what about my Ukrainian Kiev 88 backs? What do I do if one of them needs seals?

I don't know what to do when an Ukranian back needs a new seal.

But i cut seals for my Swedish backs myself, from an ethylene-propylene-diene monomer 'semi-closed' cell foam.
The stuff sounds fancy, but is available in sheets from hobby shops, for very little money.

They work as good, if not better than the original thingies.
And so ridiculously cheap that you would start changing seals just because of it, long before it would be necessary to even start thinking about doing so.

Ouch!

Perhaps i should give you an idea of how ridiculously cheap the (perfectly well suited) do-it-yourself replacement foam is.
I paid the (rough) equivalent of US$ 2 (two) for a sheet that is good for some 80 seal pads.

OK, but that is the US, sometimes I wish I could be there for a month or two........

In a pinch; you can use black electric tape. First clean the remnants with Windex, tooth picks and Q-Tips; then aply the tape.

Nope.
That is over here in Europe.
When you're in "Holland" (do you really live in Holland, or in another part of the Netherlands? If the latter, why call it Holland?), go to a Pipoos or similar hobby shop, and for a couple of Euros get enough of the stuff to last you a life time.

I recently tried to sell my Salut 6x6 (Hasselbladski) here in the classifieds section. It had light leaks something terrible. Even after purchasing a new back it still had leaks. I then decided to solve this leak problem . . . or maybe die trying. Once I discovered the the leaks were coming in from the top, both sides, and the bottom, I laid down about five thin coats of Plasti Dip Spray Flexible Rubber Coating (BLACK) with a fine paint brush in and near the light-trap groove where the camera and film back mates together. I also stopped removing and inserting the darkside until the roll was completed, or if needed, only in subdued light. Problem solved. I'm sorta glad the camera didn't sell. I enjoy a good challenge.
