Hey guys,
I recently inherited a Mamiya/sekor 500TL, although the light meter is busted on it. I had it professionally serviced, and the technician told me that he might be able to swap it out given the right parts. I was wondering whether this is possible, and whether I would need to purchase another Mamiya that uses the same meter, or if any camera from the era could be adapted. It's the classic needle in the viewfinder type, I don't know if this complicates things or not.

Thanks for reading this.

Sure it’s possible with parts from identical camera. Less possible or impossible with “similar parts”. Finding another identical camera with working meter will give you the choice of which to keep for using and which to use as a parts donor. But why not do what a lot of people in similar situation do: but a handheld light meter. There are many that are affordable and easy to use. In the long run that might be a more versatile solution.

Thanks for the suggestion. I already own a handheld light meter, a trusty Weston Euromaster. It was more about convenience and the ability to quickly expose correctly, but that is something that will eventually become second nature with the more photography I do. Ill try to chase down another Mamiya. Don't worry, I won't needlessly disassemble functioning antiques.

Thanks for your help.

The technician may have the parts and will let you know if you need a donor.
