While there are times when a dedicated piece of equipment to do a specific function may be exactly what you want, sometimes photographers want a multi-function piece of equipment. A lot of people have smart phones now, and I know there are some people on Photrio (formerly APUG) who have iPhones and have a light meter app for it.

One that works pretty well for me is called "Light Meter" and it runs on Android. It's by David Quiles. There are actually two versions, the Light Meter Free version, and the Light Meter noAds version. The free version, of course, is free, but comes with a couple limitations. When the free version is resumed, you lose your ISO setting (it reverts to ISO 100), and it reverts to an "incident" mode. The paid version doesn't have this limitation, and it has some additional settings so you can fine-tune the meter to your phone's camera.

I typically run it in reflected mode, and if I want to meter incident, meter off the palm of my hand and open up one stop. It works well with no adjustments on my Samsung J3 phone, and saves me from carrying another piece of equipment. The meter agrees fairly closely with the meter in my Pentax 35mm SLRs. I find it handy enough when shooting with my meterless 120 camera that I decided to support the author by switching to the paid version of the app. The price was hard to beat too at under 2 USD.

I have no relationship with the author, other than that of someone who liked the free version of the app well enough to pony up the $1.99 to install the paid app.
