light defect (consistently repeating), 500CM Hasselblad

Hi, fellow photographers.

Have been having this light defect appear on my photographs. Cannot confirm yet whether this is tied to any specific lens (I shoot mostly with 80 2.8) or a specific film back (I have two).

Hoping someone recognizes this.

How are the dark slide seals on the backs? Have they been replaced recently?

I only got this camera half a year ago and have never changed the seals. Attaching the photos of one of my backs (the other one is currently loaded with film)

Hard to tell the state of the seals from photos. It is a simple fix, if you are so inclined there are repair kits available from Hasselblad or ebay and tutorials on YouTube. Or find a local tech. It is routine maintenance for Hasselblad film cameras.

I changed the seal (foam strip and plastic) in every back i bought. Never had any problems since. When i started using Hasselblad i had 1-2 ruined frames because of a bad seal but i then replaced it.
What i also do is trying to shield the slit from sunlight when inserting/removing the darkslide. Don't know if it helps, but it doesn't hurt either. This is no workaround for a damaged seal but an additional precaution.

Further, i always remove the darkslide when a back is in storage. The only time a back has the slide inserted is when there is film loaded and the back is not attached to a body.
This should reduce the wear on the seal. (foam pad compression etc)

this is likely a problem with the light seal of your back. the seal needs o be replaced by a Hasselblad technician. You'll need to run a roll through each back to find out which back is the culprit but, it won't hurt to have both serviced.

I have been known to put a strip of gaffer tape over the dark slide opening.

You bought the kit from blackbird711 (Dick Werner) on eBay? Those are great, and he gives excellent directions for installing them. I used to replace the seals for my local second-hand camera shop in South London, both for the owner and his customers, with those and I've put them in all my backs, too. The first time you do it, it'll probably take you 10-15 minutes. Once you get used to it--there are two springs that tend to pop/fall out when you take the plate off, and when you understand just how to put those back in if they do, things go faster--you can knock 'em out in about 5.

One side issue I see, even occurring with me, on occasion is, with backs with slide holders, a tendency to forget or ignoring putting back the slide while out and about in an area, ie woods, city streets, waiting for model costume change, breaks, hair and clothing and product stylists or makeup artists to make on set touchups, repairs.

My backs have holders and I've grown accustomed to placing the slide in them, I have bad Psoriasis and a shirt pocket is a good possible contaminate zone, no the safe haven it used to be.

Does anyone else here have similar habits?

Early on I got fed up with searching for missing darkslides in the camera bags, shirt pockets, ... and was happy to find after market slide holders available at a decent price.
