I am somewhat frustrated when it comes to the topic of straps. The EU tried to reduce waste by proposing a common charger for electronic devices. But when it comes to straps, even within the product portfolio of one manufacturer, you see many different standards.

To begin with, does anyone know the "proper" terminology for the various fasteners/end pieces of straps? At my Hasselblad, there is some sort of snap-on release, another camera uses O rings. My new one has rectangular openings. How do you call these correctly?

Peak Design makes nice straps, all feature quick release.

Medium format cameras have dedicated straps with quick release clips.

Yeah, thanks. But I wanted to understand the terminology, not looking for manufacturers now.

As far as I know, they are called whatever they want/need to call it. Keep in mind that some terms are trademark so even if product is similar. If you want to know a specific part name (like the rectangular you are talking about) a photo would be great.

Edit: By "they", I mean the manufacturers.

I'm very hesitant to trust the Hasselblad strap clips. I wouldn't call it a fool-proof design. The Rollei clips are better, in my opinion. But I'd prefer a lug that a keyring can be laced through. I couldn't care less about scratches but definitely don't want the camera falling to the ground.

I have only used the Hasselblad strap clips on my Hasselelblds and I have never had a problem with them.

I have had very positive experience with these straps. They are on several Leicas. They come in different colors and have the leather strap ring protector on them. The only complaint I have, is that their are a bit short for me as I am tall. But it's a minor thing. They are very nice straps at an good price. I'd consider them appropriate for any 35mm camera, rangefinder or SLR, and any of the smaller digital bodies, mirrorless an so forth.

I find them somewhat flimsy, the narrow cordura ends seem to twist and turn and all in all the strap looks like an Alibaba bargain bin speecial.

The Hasselblad type posts or lugs are sometimes called mushroom heads, designed for a clip with a sliding retainer. There are actually two slightly different common diameters of these posts and it is good to get the right clip for security. One matches Hasselblad and some other cameras (3mm slot), and the other matches some Mamiya and Pentax medium format and other cameras (4mm slot). Optech calls them Super Pro type A and B, listed here: https://www.optechusa.com/collections/connectors

Optech also has a variety of other connectors that can girth-hitch or loop onto lugs and D-rings of various sizes. Many of them have QR buckles so you can change out the center strap part. Browsing through their connector and strap pages is useful for ideas even if you don't use their system. One can get all the pieces at places like B&H. I also think they are reasonably priced.

I've used OpTech Pro straps for years on all my 35mm and medium format cameras. You can change the ends of the strap to suit the intended camera's connection lugs; the type "A" connector is what you want for a Hasselblad.

The common terminology that I use and hear most commonly are:

Strap LUG: the part on the camera that the strap is attached

Strap CLIP: the part of the strap that attaches to the camera either directly or using an intermediary device:

Lug RING: a split circular ring or split triangle ring or split trapezoidal ring.

... and the cord attachments that seem to be replacing strap clips on lightweight straps appear to alternatively called "strap fasteners".

Some straps, though, have just strap material that is looped for attachment to a lug ring and secured with a fastener. I think those are just called "strap ends".

There is a possibility that something as exclusive as Leica or Hasselblad has a more bougie term.

I don't have a Hasseblad so I don't know what kind of straps Hasselbald sells. I always use straps sold by the camera manufacturers. I don't have problem with manufacturers having different kind of straps. I do no like the idea of everything should be USB chargeable. I prefer dedicated charger optimized for each device. I prefer the charging controller to be with the charger and not the battery which USB charging would have to put such a circuit in the battery.

I understand why you started this thread, and apparently the answer is: there really is no answer. It's not consistent technical terminology.

But as how to folks are responding (and why I opened the thread), perhaps the title is misleading. You don't really want to "talk" straps after all. You just want to know what they're called. It might help bring us back to your question if you explained why you're searching for consistent terminology. What problem does the current fluidity cause?

I dont understand your well-intentiioned yet complex question.

I am looking for 3rd party straps for some of my cameras and I seem to be too stupid to understand the terminology of the manufacturers.

For everything which has the usual lugs (sometimes small holes, other times aluminum triangles or rings etc), I use Peak Design, since I can move the strap easy from one camera to the other.

For the Pentax 645, I use the mentioned Optech stuff, since it's not the lug type but a pole.

The lugs on my Praktina are too tiny to get the Peak Design adapters through, but I have a beautiful leather strap which works good there. But I guess I could just use some small rings on the lugs and attach the Peak Design there.

Most annoying: Cameras without lugs/poles that were meant to use the lugs on the leather half case which is now lost or broken... For those, you have to use the case or hang it on the tripod mount. For me, that's the Canon Demi EE17, Agfa Ambi Silette. For my Super Ikonta, I have the leather case at least...

Very old Leicas fall into that category, also. The last thing you want to trust is a 90-year-old leather strap.
