called...”what the hell are you gonna do now chris?”


Weather is rainy so I decided to roll up some rolls for developing this afternoon. Loaded 4 rolls this morning. I was just laying here picking up the remnants and rolled up the backing paper like I normally do. Anyone see a problem?



So the question is... what the hell do I do now? I know which tank it’s in, but have no idea which reel it is.

Process that tank for which ever time is the longest. The other roll will have a bit of extra contrast, but likely nothing that can't be overcome at your printing or scanning stage.

In XTOL 1+1, the times listed on the XTOL data sheet are 9m and 9m30s. You could split the difference and develop for 9m15s. I suspect development times would be close with other developers also. HC-110 times are quite different.

Another option is to develop the two TX400 rolls you know are loaded together and then split the two rolls in the other tank into two tanks. Develop one at a compromise time. After that you can look at the rebate on that roll and identify the identity of the other roll and develop appropriately.

I personally would use XTOL 1+1 at 9m15s (unless I absolutely knew the TMax images were all masterpieces and then would use the TMax times).

I'm sure somebody will recommend stand processing, but I have never had great results with that.

I don’t have any XTOL, only HC110, but you have a good suggestion. The two known rolls just came out the first tank, and I think I remembered what the TMax roll was and I’m not all that concerned about the images on it. It was shoot at the hip stuff on a boat outing one day last summer.

Guess I need to look at the HC110 times and dilutions and come up with a compromise.

do you have any DEKTOL print developer ?
or some instant coffee baking soda and powdered vit c?
if you had ansco 130 (pf130) you'd be able to make the best film developer ... ever

Of Tmax!

B&W film developing can be very forgiving. I made the same mistake once with 2 reels in the one tank. Reel 1 time should have been 8 mins and reel 2 should been 11 mins. I processed for 11 mins and when dry, the 8 min film only looked a little over developed (you had to look hard at the edge markings).

6 min HC-110 dil B for Tmax 400 vs. 7.5 min HC-110 dil B for Tri-X
I would simply do them both for 6 min 45 sec, and realiize one will be denser than expected, and the other willl be slightly thinner than expected. <shrugi>

Christopher, I wouldn't stress too much about it. If all the shots on both reels are important, I'd develop for the longest time...or split the difference between them. No worries.

T'was the anniversary of our loving nuptuals yesterday so I was unable to devote any time to it. They're still sitting in the tank, in the same position, on the same table.

Take all four reels out (in the dark, of course), back enough off to cut a corner off (where the tape is), compare all four pieces to see which reel is different.

After 19 years its probably more like survival than priorities! LOL I know what kind of punishment I'm in for if I dont pay attention!
