LensWork Extended

I just thought I would mention that I received my first issue of LensWork Extended today and was generally very pleased. Getting to hear the photogrpahers discuss their work is a very interesting.

I'm still trying to decide how I fell about Huntington Witheriill's portfolio of color botanicals. They were created digitally, which didn't bother me, but I think they have ecllipsed the boundaries of photography. An interesting departure for a photographer know for his traditionally based images.

Anyone else reading LW Extended?

I finally got Issue # 57, in which Brooks discussed the concept and contents at length. Given the space limitations of the magazine (96 pages per issue). I think lenswork extended is a good idea. If you go to the Lenswork website, they are offering an initial 1/2 price offer on Lenswork Extended. Seems like a nice incentive.

Besides including many more photographs, and longer interview with the photographers, I particularly like the idea of inclusion of color work. There's lots of really good stuff out there and you can pretty much only see it in View Camera magazine, which, of late, has very little else to offer, meaning I can't justify the purchase price for one portfolio.

BTW, I notice Brooks is now including photographer's camera/lens info for each portfolio, to satisfy the hardware junkies. A camera is a camera. I'd like to see the photographer's Film, Developer, Paper choices; it would be much more interesting.

I subscribed to the extended edition when it was first announced, so I've had the CD for a while now. It's an interesting way to publish, but for me it doesn't replace the paper magazine. The printing in LensWork is so exceptional that I'll continue to buy it even though I'll get the CD every time.

I do like the inclusion of the audio commentaries and the extended portfolios. In at least one case there was a photograph that I liked more than the one that was included in the printed magazine; being very similar to one that was included meant that one or the other of them wasn't going to show up in the magazine. It was nice to see the other on the CD.

I don't have any appreciation for Huntington Witheriill's computer-manipulated color stuff; but that's just because it's not a style I'm interested in. I do appreciate having the chance to see it though...being exposed to art that I don't like is as important to me as being exposed to art that I do like.

I enjoyed the section on the creation of the printed magazine very much.

Overall, I have to say that I love the idea of the CD as an adjunct to the printed magazine. I'm glad it's available, and I'm looking forward to what will be in the next issue.
