It's very good, except for the lack of an aperture ring.

I don't think it's unusual for Nikon to throw everything at a kit lens to woo new photographers, look at the amazing quality of the 24-70 Z lens. And speed aside (or because it is 'slow') the 28-80 is incredible across it's range because there is little if any fall off at any length. It's also sharp but very, very plasticky. Buy wisely on the big auction site and you can often get a 'free' camera attached to it.

I avoid G lenses if at all possible because I use the aperture ring.

It will work in P and S.
M and A will default to smallest aperture.
Touch and feel is terrible but it is optically excellent not least considering what it sells for.

Some cameras have a dial you can use, often on the front right next to the shutter release button to choose the aperture? It's also worth mentioning that many Nikon cameras can't use G lenses anyway, so they must be be equally lame (let's trash old Nikon's and newer Nikkor's in the same thread for the balance)

Although I use mainly Minolta and Canon cameras ( AF and MF ) I have some Nikon cameras too AF & MF, and likewise most of my lenses have aperture rings for the same reason . Of seven or eight F mount cameras I have , only three are fully compatible with G lenses , and there my three least used Nikon F mount cameras .

Who's trashing older Nikon's ?
It's a valid point .
If you have cameras that aren't compatible with G lenses , it's best to stick with lenses with aperture rings .
The O.P is asking about the 28-80mm G kit lens . There's budget lenses that do just as well that have aperture rings , so can be used on older cameras including the O.P's N90s .

Fantastic lens! I have two of them, one silver and the other in black. There was a thread about this lens a while back. Or maybe it was just discussion in the N80 thread.

It is an auto focus lens, and there are only a handful of AF Nikons that even allow use of the aperture ring even when present on the AF lens. Usually the aperture ring, when present, has to be fixed at F22.
