Hello Everyone,

Can you please recommend a good quality (not very expensive) lens pouch for my Leica 50mm Elmar f2.5 (1957-1974)? I don't want to buy a Leica pouch (- not even sure if they are available cheap). It would be better if it is
(1) not too big (compare to the lens size) and I can put the lens inside without collapsing it
(2) able to absorb shock, and
(3) washable and waterproof when closed

Please post links too.

If you decide to use a pouch, watch out for the RH, Temps and always have the front and back caps on.
For prolonged storage don't bother with a pouch since they start to grow some nasty stuff overtime.

Jerevan: Thanks for the box suggestion. I imagine you suggested it as I was looking for something sturdy and waterproof. But I was hoping for something flexible and more lens-pouch-like shape.

Georg: As for avoiding fungal development, I'm quite careful. So thank you for the reminder.

Is there anything similar to Lowepro lens pouch (but smaller) that ticks those points?

Ashfaque,

It was actually because you said it should be able to absorb shocks ... so I was thinking heavy duty stuff. Let's see if some else chimes in. Hope you find something!

have someone who knows how to sew make you a small cloth bag out of heavy material, perhaps lined with an old piece of sheet or some other non-linting material ...really, doesn't have to be more than that. Camera stores, when they existed, sold a lot of small drawstring lens bags that were little more than that.

The cloth bag that some bottles of whiskey come in get used for this a lot. Or go to any sporting goods store and see what they have in the way of small bags for camping/packing/.

shockproof? line it with bubble wrap.

Lens cases are such a problem. Hard ones offer the best protection but are bulky. Soft one have less shock protection but conform to shape better. In 45 years of messing about with cameras I've yet to find either a perfect lens case or camera bag. I now lean to wraps because just a few sizes can conform to a variety of lens configurations.

Summicron: do you have a video? It might just be helpful if I can find the matetials in the local shops. I could then ask a local artisan about it.

Pioneer: Great idea. I'll wrap the lens with a lint free fabric and put in inside a sock in the mean time.

I use something similar for my camera's wrist strap - a piece of strong shoelace, costing only 2-3 Pounds from Tesco. :D

A leather or Cordura material outside and velvet inside. Simple drawstring or zipper closure will work pretty well, remember
though; you want to get your fingers in the bag to get the lens out.
Personally I'd think about 2 1/2-3" diameter by about 3 1/2-5" tall. If you want some additional cushion of layer or two of thin
packing material would do.
I could send you some of the cushion stuff if you like.

Material choices: Cordura because it's water resistant and velvet for it's softness and doesn't shed fibers.

Hi John,

Thanks for the idea and offer. Could you please post some specs (thickness, & any useful details) and images of the materials you have in mind. I can then look for those in Dhaka. Getting them from abroad will be quite expensive and will defeat the purpose of minimal cost for the pouch.

Hi,
My ability to get a picture of this stuff is really lacking.
The thickness is ~3/32" or 1.5mm I usually find used as packing it in things I have shipped to me. Another material
is a micro fiber towel. It would be less protective but more flexible.

Where is Dhaka?

I would recommend a lens wrap like others have suggested as they are good for wrapping many things, but as that idea seems to be meeting some resistance what about these

Dead Link Removed

The small size neoprene pouch is good for small lenses, the medium for medium cameras and larger lenses, and into the large you can fit a Leica M with a reasonably compact lens mounted.

If available space for storage/carrying, is not a problem, seek to acquire a longer pouch, of a slightly wider, or the same, internal diameter: long ones are easier to source, and filling the unwanted area with foam insert pieces, will usually resolve the üroblem. One word of warning, however: when buying a pre-used item of this sort, be very sure to checkthat there is no trace of mould inside it, which can wreck a lens. If buying in UK, a good source of cheap lens cases, is charity shops.

You can use the 'socks' that mobile phones live in a small lens will push in easily.

Ritz Camera used to sell padded lens pouches. I bought two of them. It's about four inches tall and is the perfect size for a 50mm or shorter lens.

I don't know if you can find one on eBay.

Edit: I see that you are in Bangladesh. I probably would consider some type of wrapping material that others have mentioned. Be careful when you unwrap the lens so that it doesn't end up falling to the ground.

If you are in UK, visit charity shops on towns which have a university or technical college that does a photography course . If You do this and you find something suitable, have a deep sniff inside it to make sure there's no mould in it. I have sourced several such items, very cheaply
