Hello!
Recently I received a lens hood that is specifically made for the Voigtlander 58mm f1.4 for Nikon. Unfortunately there was a miscommunication between myself and the seller - the lens hood has a 52mm filter thread whereas my Voigtlander lens has a 58mm thread.
Thank you for bearing with me; here is my question:
Can I use this lens hood on any lens with a 52mm filter thread? Can I use this lens hood on my lens with a step-up ring? I've been told that using certain hoods on certain lenses can cause vignetting. Can anyone clarify the rules of lens hoods for me? I'd love to make use of this beautiful lens hood if possible!

I apologize sincerely if my question is vaguely moronic, and I thank you truly for sharing your time and erudition!

Oh pardon me! It occurs to me that it would be a step down ring that I would need, which I believe will cause vignetting?

On any lens in the 50mm range, will not work on wide like 28mm, depending on the hood might work on 35mm, for telephoto on the short end around 90 or 100, but at longer end the hood may not good job of shading.

I wonder if the hood will work on my 105mm 2.5 ! I will soon find out!

The Voigtlander hood with the 52mm thread should work fine on a Nikon 105mm f/2.5 with a 52mm filter thread, although it may be a little shorter than ideal for that focal length. The only source I am aware of for longer screw-in metal hoods for telephoto lenses is B+W. They sell one (model number 960) in a variety of sizes; B&H carries them. They are about $30 IIRC (still cheaper than the Voigtlander hoods for their Nikon mount lenses).

Sincere thanks to you! For the moment I am using this Voigtlander hood and slip-on cap with the 105. I am hoping the pictures will come back looking swell! The Voigtlander is a joy - the push-on lens cap makes an airtight seal and the design is quite lovely! The lens hoods you mention look great and I wonder if they can be used together with a slip-on / push-on cap...

You're quite welcome! Not sure about the caps. I use the 52mm version of the hoods I linked to above an it's easy to use the same size center-pinch lens caps on the lens. You could also measure the diameter of the front of the hood and get a lens cap to match.
