For their 100th episode — a video podcast on youtube, the Classic Lens Podcast brought me on to show my lens design software, Zemax, and talk about lens design work.

This is very technical stuff, but should be interesting to anyone who wants to know how optics are designed in the modern era.

After navigating the software, I start with a landscape lens (invented in 1815, used on the Kodak Brownie) and show the evolution — in zemax — of that basic lens into the Double Gauss design invented by Paul Rudolph. The Double Gauss family of design forms the basis for the vast majority of today’s modern camera lenses.
