Leica(meras) are not small.

In 35mm, you can hardly get smaller than the Barnack Leica, yet having interchangeable lenses, accessories, etc.
After Barnack, pretty much every small camera copied and still copy the layout of the Barnack Leica.

Leitz hit the jackpot back then on so many levels...

My comment refers to a contribution to the discussion with -for my taste- inappropriate and offensive content. It is deleted now as far as I can see.

This "stupid and disrespectful trash talk" was targeted at me and I would have been "unpleasantly touched" if it was said by someone in his right mind, which someone who is trying to explain the name Leica in this way, obviously is not.
It was targeted at me, because I had the nerve to compare this "research" with another fact in history which is being denied only in one country in the world. It was a silly joke, I know, but that's just me
It would probable have been much worse, maybe even a bit improper if I would have made references to more recent history.
That said, I'm convinced that Leica comes from Leitz Camera, nothing more, nothing less.

Ok I have another propositions:
Nik - on - from Nike - ancient victory goddess
Can-on - easy to turn on
Pen-tax - Easy like pen but you should pay more tax for it
Foca - Polish foka - seal (animal)
Zorki - from Zorro name
Pentacon - Penta Kon - Good like Pentax and Konica

You almost certainly know this, but others may not: zorkiy (зоркий) means "sharp sighted" or "observant". However, I am certain Zorro was photographed with that camera.

Also, "laika" (лайка), the first dog in space, means something like "barker" - a dog that barks a lot. So, obviously Leica was called that because its shutter is so loud and annoying.

Now all we have to do is determine whether "Bronica" is from "Zenzaburo-no nica" or "Zenza buroni".

I think that "Bronica" is from Polish - "bronić" - [ˈbrɔ.ɲit͡ɕ] - it means to defend, because it can be use to self-defense.
