Hi, I have a really nice Leica Summicron Dual Range lens which came with my M3. Serial no. 1593218 and focus distance scale in feet only. Only problem is it never came with the close focus goggles. I know the goggles don't always fit / work on some DR's depending on the size ball on the flat top mount - large and small. Is there any way I can tell which I need for my particular lens?
Steve Gandy's "cameraquest" web site has a wealth of (disorganized) information about all things Leica. Here's a page about the DR Summicron that might help....
There are two types of goggles for the DR, and they both fit. But only one works correctly depending on the construction date/type.
The one that came with my 50 DR is the wrong one - the images do not match up in the vertical axis but they do in the horizontal so I can focus correctly. It just would be much nicer if both planes match up. I'd love to exchange it with someone who also has the wrong goggle set!
Thanks for posting - your post and the replies have made me inspect my DR Summicron and check it out again.
Since I bought it two years ago, I've had cataract surgery, and I'm "sure" that the viewfinder is now clearer than it was before! My DR's "eyes" are of the second type shown by Steve Gandy, and the registration in both axes is excellent. (I bought my used DR Summicron, complete with viewfinder, from Ffordes Photographic in Scotland.)
