Can anyone out there tell me what the thread size is for the external threads (I know filter thread is 39)
on the Leica Summarit 35mm F2.5?

I'd appreciate it.

The kit hood is normally hiding in the lens cap...

I realise you asked a different question.

I measured the ring, which comes on the lens to cover the hood thread. It shows 41.5mm diameter. 40.5 filter is small, 43 is big.

Thanks Ko.Fe. That's exactly what I was trying to figure...I just picked up a Summarit 35/2.5 and it had no lens hood but I was a little
confused as some images of the lens showed threads, others did not...I figured it was a filter thread cover. Thanks Mate.

The lens comes with a push on cap which the mini (kit) hood hides in.
A lotta people don't think they have the complete lens, cap and mini hood...
If the cap fits on the lens you also have the mini hood!

?
I got the rectangular hood today from B&H which comes with a hood/lens cover. My question
was about the external lens hood threads...the internal filter threads are 39, which I knew.
My lens was purchased without the hood, and there is a little thread protection
ring that is removed to expose the outer lens hood thread for the hood, which
screws on. As per some online suggestions, I applied teflon tape to the threads
to make the lens hood stay put.

Some people make do with the thread protection ring as a mini hood.

Good move!
I didn't like the lens look without it. After adding hood it feels balanced. And worked well on this weekend under snowfall.

My lens hood is also from B&H, used department.
