I got some promotions on the SL cameras in my email today. It's a camera I only have a rough knowledge of (film shooter here), but wow, what an odd looking camera. Now I have been known to shoot some pretty weird stuff, but this thing looks right out of a Buck Rogers Saves the Universe movie, so at least the Leica looks cool.

In other types of selling, this sort of promotion that Leica is using usually means that sales are not happening, so the Super-Trade-In card gets played, a carry over from the auto sales lots in the U.S.

Does anyone here have one, or maybe considering buying one? Digital or not, a MF Leica camera w/ Leica glass is in a different league.

The Leica SL and SL2 are full frame cameras with a sensor size of 24mm x 36mm. The S3 is Leica's current "medium format" camera. The S3 has a sensor size of 30mm x 45mm. By contrast, the film size for 645 is 56mm x 43mm, 6x6 is 56mm x 56mm, and 6x7 is 56mm x 67mm.

Yeah. Leica digital MF is more akin to a super full-frame 35 than MF. I think of it as the APS-C of MF. That said the older CCD Leica S is a fantastic camera if you get one that has had the sensor replaced. The early sensors had a problem with corrosion or crystallization of the cover glass. What is nice about the S is at about the same size and weight of a prod FF DSLR, you have a much larger sensor and of course, fabulous Leica lenses. Fabulously expensive, too. The new S body goes for $20 grand, a normal lens $5 grand.
