Leica M2

But it is an SLR. You may as well look through the middle of a toilet roll.

Really??
My SLRs will do everything my Rfs do, and quite a bit more.
My Rfs will not do everything my SLRs do.

For a demonstration you can do at home, take your Rf of choice and try taking a picture of a shilling at half life size. See?

Best means what?

Best quality build, Alpa 11E

Best with 50mm Alpah 11 E

Best with motor drive Canon EOS1 V with battery pack

Best, meaning easy to use Pentax Spotmatic

Best by number of lens and accessories Nikon F, F2, F3,

Best by small and light full system SLR Pentax LX or Olympus OM4

Best Rangfinder, screw mount Canon 7S

Best Rangfinder M mount Konica M

Best undervalued 35mm Yashica FR with Ziess Lens

Best by camera I like the most to carry Sigma SA 9.

Best to me, other have their own list of bests.

No one has asked the OP "Why do you ask?"
There is usually a question behind the question.
Is the query only seeking others opinions and preferences? Is the OP looking for reinforcement that they have made a wise choice in a recent purchase? Are they merely considering said purchase and are looking for others opinions before they commit?

Or, is it just a dull day and they thought this would spark a lively discussion?

I forgot to tell my opinion on the best 35mm camera. Well here goes; Olympus Pen F (not the FT or FV, I don't like the focusing screen in them) Yes, of course I'm aware it is a half frame, I like half frame. If you are going to shoot postage stamp size negatives, then go all the way and shoot postage stamp size negatives!

No.
I prefer my M4, MP... Still, my M2 is a Mean-Sex-Machine, just like me.

Was the Leica M2 the best 35mm film camera ever made?

No! The Leica MP was and is the best 35mm film rangefinder camera ever made.

No! The Nikon F2 is a better 35mm film camera.

No! The Nikon F2 titanium is the best 35mm film camera ever made.

I will say my MP is better than my M2, for me. But the M2 is so classic and gorgeous in its own right I'll never sell it. Plus I use it when I go somewhere I'd rather not be carrying a $3000 camera body.

Ever hear the expression Clive " comparisons are odious ".

I can't help note that many of your posts have negative connotations. Are you a grumpy old man?

I'm almost 76 I can't deny I'm old Clive, but I'm only grumpy with people who ask loaded questions. Happy New Year

I'm a mean sex machine, and that's super positive.

Thanks Steve I've always though a good photographer can make excellent pictures with any half decent camera, you have only got to look in this forum's gallery to prove it, and since the original poster owns a Leica M2 I think he should have "declared his interests" as MPs have to do in our parliament before he made the statement.

I think the most insightful answer to the most obviously begged question is,

"There is far more to a well-lived life than living it vicariously through M2s, Leica, and HCB..."

OK, probably overly harsh and I should apologize.

But still and all...

I have troubles even with Canon Ps in our streets.
People think that either

street photography is illegal eg occupy protestors!
Other photographers who want to know what

- a film camera is
- a rangefinder is
- an aperture depth of field scale is
- a light meter is

I've had people confiscate a Weston put it on an out door table and do a digital photo shoot of it.

Although I haven't owned one for many years, the number of good shots that came out of my Olympus OM1 suggests it is the greatest. After the OM1 there are various contenders, but the second greatest was probably a consumer Nikon F301, which wouldn't be near the top of many peoples' league tables. Third place goes to an Olympus MjuII.

They come ahead of Nikon F, F2, Canon T90, Mamiya C330s, 5 x 4, a borrowed Leica M3 and many others. The only definite conclusion I can draw is the camera has next to nothing to do with the quality of the shots. Being committed to getting them is the greatest accessory a photographer can have.

Was the Leica M2 the best 35mm film camera ever made?

No, the Leica M2 is not the best camera ever made. This camera on eBay is the best camera ever made, it's still available and you should buy it before the auction ends.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/LEICA-MP-BL...524370304?pt=Film_Cameras&hash=item418c28fb80

Then, you will certainly have the best camera ever made. (At least the seller's description would make you believe it's the best - "This is a golden opportunity for THE FINEST Leica camera ever made. ".)

I did a Make an Offer at a bit less than his asking. I'll keep you all posted.

The best camera is the one you always use when you absolutely need a photo, no second chance.

True. For me when I was still doing weddings on the side, it was a Nikon F4s with colour neg film, and Hasselblad CM with b+w film. They made me feel confident that I'd gotten the picture.
