I'll never understand why Leica used the nonstandard plug requiring the adaptor. I've never seen any flash with the Leica plug.

Yes well back in the early fifties when the M3 came out, I'm not so sure the "PC-type" flash plug was as standard as it is now. For instance, the Contax rangefinders had their own connector as did the Nikon rangefinders.
