I have a Leica iiic and am slightly confused by one thing; the rangefinder 'window' (the right hand side window when behind the camera) has a red glass in it. Can anyone explain the reason for this.

Many thank, George.

It's probably to give the rangefinder image greater contrast, but the red color seems unusual. The official Leica items for this purpose (OKARO or ORAKO, depending on the model of camera) are yellow. They slip onto one of the front rangefinder windows.

Actually the OKARO and ORAKO are both orange in color..

Is the red glass mounted in the back or on the front glass?

Thanks for the informative responses. I have (nervously) removed the screw cover and found that it is a home made 'okaro' made from red lighting gel.

Was it not working well?
