I'm thinking of getting a Leica flash for my M6 TTL with a 35mm F2 lens, for use as fill, portraits and snap-shots. I'm wondering if I should get an SF 20 or an SF 24. I have read of over exposure problems with the SF 24, but I imagine that can be controlled. Any suggestions?

Aside of a Leica flash you might use the SCA 3501 adapter (version M2 or M3) and any SCA 3000 flash.

I haven't noticed over exposure issues with the SF 24, and I have two of them. Works great w/ film cameras, crap on digital Leicas (forgive me for mentioning those)

I've done all that you mention with my M6 TTL. I kept the SF-20 for an easy tote fill/emergency flash. I have larger Metz rigs with the SCA adapters. They all work well and are predictable. I don't tend to use my RF gear in situations that I would be using the large flash units so I can't supply too much info there... Also, remember that the big rigs like the 76-MZ Metz units don't coordinate well as you run out of hands to hold, focus, shutter trip while trying to function with it all. My 54-MZ on a Stroboframe, oriented correctly works just okay as it is light enough to hold at awkward positions. I like wink light flashes and if pressed into quick duty, I would just mount the 54-MZ w/SCA right to the hot shoe and head out.... My SCA's are 3502 rigs, I believe (I'm not where the equipment is as I write this).
