Thanks, Stephe. I'm a newbie at all this. That's good to know. I also looked at some 28mm Rokkors, which cost less, but they all have milky droplets present inside. Is this the Minolta version of "schneideritis"?

After reading, I would avoid this lens.

The advantage of purchasing a lens with schneideritis is that it costs less. The phenomenon has been discussed for years and as you probably know Schneider themselves stated that it has no effect. What I am talking about are the small bubbles of white that are visible in the blacked out metal that surrounds a lens element.

I would agree, but it appears this lens also has issues with spots on the inner lens surface that can't be easily cleaned off + the lens is hard to service even if it was possible.

I had the rokkor with schneideritis, on that particular lens it did affect contrast. Ended up returning it. I would avoid it unless you get a clean one or with not too much defect.

I would certainly agree if there are spots on the lens elements themselves that’s a different matter.
Coldeye- that’s interesting, I have never heard of it having an effect- but I stand corrected.

I’m in the club for under $300. The Elmar may go back, depending on how the images look. It has some serious scratches on the rear lens element. I can’t imagine how they got there. Everything else seems ok. It will take some practice to use the guidelines when composing. I’ll shoot a roll of film this weekend and see how it does. I suspect there will be flare from the scratches.

Now with a like-new CV Nokton 40mm f1.4, which arrived today. Can’t wait to try it out.

You can really see the patina from this angle. The serial number indicates it was made in 1971. Still working on the first roll of film. Until it’s developed I won’t know how accurate the focus is with either lens. The Elmar cleaned up well. What I thought were scratches turned out to be some fungus, which I’ll treat soon. I’m thinking it will be good for portraits, provided the focus is accurate.

And yes, that’s the infamous non-focusing Bronica 50mm lens in the background.
