Hey folks,

I'm trying to get better at shooting and printing and have never explored the zone system outside of whatever basic, intuitive stuff that comes from being a black and white shooter.

Any books, dvd's, youtube channels, anything that you've found helpful?

My favorite introductory book to the zone system is Johnstons "The Practical Zone System." A straight forward explanation with practical examples.

Adams' The Negative. It's all there.

I am working on an article (and video) for my site concerning simplified practical application and principles, but it will not likely be ready for a few months.

I'd recommend against it. It was a black-box method. Instead I'd recommend 'opening up the box' and learning more about film and paper's response to light and development and go from there.

Go for it...............no matter what text referrence you get, also get The Negative ,you'll get opinions for and against, only you can decide.

I just got done pledging to help anyone wishing to explore these techniques. Now it is a bit late. Christmas Eve is coming and I have to make some prints. I would like to refer you to this article.

It is the article that got Ansel Adams excited.

John L. Davenport and the Zone System

(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

Can you think of any better way to start thinking about the Zone System?
