Just wanted to put up a pointer to this excellent site I've found with instructions for disassembly and adjustment of various old shutters.

Using the instructions for Compur-Rapid shutters I could figure out enough to clean a Synchro-Compur shutter that's been troublesome for a long time, and it seems to have worked pretty well!

Also includes instructions for adjustment of many old cameras, largely 35mm rangefinder types.

Excellent link, David. How did you dig this one up? Never seen it before - and we've seen quite a bit of such repair sites. Is it new? Is mr. Mitchell a member of this forum? I think he should be...

Just did an Ilex #3. It's had a recent CLA, so I didn't need to take apart the whole thing, but a couple drops of oil in the retard mechanism seems to have fixed the slow speeds, and now I understand a good deal more about how it works.

Good stuff David.. thanks for the link. I guess most of the problems are dried up lubricants. I read that a light oil is needed on some parts and a grease is needed on other areas of the shutter. The Romney book is not too bad for some of the shutter illustrations.

I bought it a while ago. It tries to cover many different camera repairs. Much of the material is copied from original service manuals. It has some decent illustrations of some of the common shutters..

Save your money Dave. The books by the Ed are the worst I have seen. IMHO. I have a problem with any camera repair information that recommends silicone oil for leaf shutters or home-made bondo and a hammer for dented top plates on SLR's. For really good stuff, it is very very hard to beat the National Camera manuals. Especially the ones they used in the camera reapir tech course. I also highly recommend any books by Thomas Tomosy. They are expensive, but they are very well written. I have only seen 5 Camera Craftsman magazines, but if they do any leaf shutters as well as they do SLR's, they would also be top notch information. I have an original Gauthier shop manual from 1955 if anybody need info on diagnosing Prontor or Vario shutters.

Whatever..... Like I said, they provide some decent illustrations on some of the shutters. I never said it was the greatest repair book in the world. I also have the Tomosy books and they are very expensive. Much of the information is helpful in general, (I guess they can't cover everything).

I don't have the National Camera manuals. Are thay still available?
