Hi everyone.
I joined in 2011 but never became active with the site. I originally found this site when I was looking for information about processing film. I found my answers and a lot more. There are very knowledgeable people here and are always willing to share what they know. I've also enjoyed viewing all the great photos I've seen on this site and I've learned a great deal from them to help me become a better photographer (I hope). I want to thank all of you.
I'm no longer working so now I have a lot more time to spend on doing photography. My interests vary and the equipment I use has grown over the past years.
I really enjoy photography and I look forward to sharing and getting to know other photographers here.

chip j,

To answer you where Rhode Island is on the map we are located sandwiched between Connecticut and Massachusetts, it's the smallest state in the Union.

chip j,

glad of that. it wouldn't have surprised me if you weren't joking, I've seen some videos of people being asked simple questions about the US and they didn't have a clue, lol.

Welcome from a little ways north in the North East.
Why is it called Rhode Island if it's not an island?:whistling:
Other trivia, it's smaller than San Bernardino county in California.

Welcome to the member from the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. When I was at Univ. of Rhode Island (MS oceanography) my checks had that spelled out in total. Somewhere in the Providence area, there used to be a well-known repair person who could fix large format lenses or adapt barrel lenses to various shutters. I assume he must be long retired. Also, as I recall, I used to visit a photo shop in Providence that still had brand new Canon M39 thread mount lenses. In hindsight, why didn't I buy them all?

This may sound dumb but how do I go about posting pictures?
In a thread, you can click the "upload image or file" button.
As a subscriber, you can post in the media gallery, click on "Media" in the forum menu bar, then "Add Media" in the lower menu bar.

HA!

there are 2 stories, really 3 ..
giovanni da verrazzano ( 1524isn ( was doing his exploring-thing
up the coast from NYC ... and he either saw block island (1)
or newport (acquidneck island) ( 2 ) colossus of rhodes fame ) ...
and there was also adriaen block who in the early 1614ish found
"block" island ( new shoreham named after him ) and called it
"roode eylandt" rhode = red in dutch ( 3 ) .. because it had red soil.
roode became rode then rhode ... roger wiliams called place he ended
up "providence" so whichever island was rhode island and the rest was
providence plantations ...

kodachromeguy,
Thank you.
I think it's funny that RI is the smallest state but has the longest name. I don't know about the fix it guy. Hunt's used to be downtown.

Yea I read some of those stories. Strange how the early explorers would sail in somewhere
and would claim it theirs' and put their name on it when it already had a name.

They would claim land that was already inhabited and owned. But then again there were not even concerned with facts. They had an alternative truth.

I read somewhere a historian wrote the only reason they got away with it is the natives were peaceful and believed no-one owned the land and there fore couldn't sell what wasn't their's.

then there is that stone tower in newport, the one the "vikings", "chinese" and "aliens from venus" built
Dead Link Removed

if you ever find yourself in newport ( acquidneck / rhode-island) its worth the walk
both to check out the tower, and visit jim's museum...
