I am traveling to Las Vegas on business and will have about 7 hours or so to take some photos. I will probably be shooting black and white with an RZ67 so mobility is not great. I will not be able to hike that far from the car as I will be alone and do not know the area. My time will be from noon until dusk most likely.

I am looking for some nice rock formations or other natural phenomenon, but I am open to suggestions. I do not have much room for error due to flights. Are there ghost towns or anything else? I know Red Rock Canyon is nearby but the photos I have seen are not too interesting. Bryce would be ideal but I think it is too far. A 1 hour drive each way is probably max. Ease of getting to the setup location is vitally important as well.

Or should I just roam Vegas?

Thanks.

What would be your preference - Red Rock Canyon or Valley of Fire and Why?

I've done both, usually with 4x5". Both are close to town.

Red Rock Canyon has lots of easily accessible spots, and seems like a good trip, if you don't have much time. Valley of Fire has some amazing rock formations, and borders on Lake Mead, so there's quite a lot to see. You could definitely find plenty of interesting shots at either place, and both are worth visiting and revisiting, but I think I'd want the full day for Valley of Fire.

Valley of Fire is definitely an all day trip. Red Rock is half a day trip. My only complaint about Red Rock is you can't just stop anywhere to shoot. I think Valley of Fire had more side of the road opportunities.

I'll be out that way end of next week, I think Valley of Fire is on my agenda.

Enjoy.

Eric

I noticed the Ansel Adams exhibit closed at Bellagio.

Drive toward the Hoover Dam. Along the way you will find new Nevada, Desert and old structures. you could spend a life time there.
